It sounds like whatever bad redirect file is on the machine has highjacked the Hosts file.

See if one of these 'bootable' antivirus rescue disks help to get you booted again (use a clean computer to download, then create the CD).

Not working!

I got the Kaspersky rescue disk on my usb but it won't boot on my sister netbook. And yes I have set it to boot a usb drive before the hard drive.

What error message do you get when you try and boot from the USB? Which program did you use to make the USB bootable?

two possibilities I can think of.
One some netbooks require you to press f10 or something to that effect during start up (boot menu) to boot usb even if you've set it in bios.

two, sometimes just trying another usb port helps, but this being a netbook I suppose it's possible it only has one.

Ok here the answers to all of your questions:

A: Don't get one. I can't boot from it. But I do get this bsod error code: 0x0000007E when I try to boot it regularly.

I get screen saying edit windows boot options. I don't get anything saying boot from usb.

Hey Guys,

I have set up the BIOS to boot from the usb, checked if each usb port is able to be booted from and I made sure the usb has a windows boot file but it won't boot from the usb. I am try to boot kaspersky's rescue disk. How do I fix this?

A follow up to these recommended procedures

Thanks for all these replies, even though I was not the original poster. Had exactly these symptoms and had scanned, and removed, a registry setting to auto-start a dll and the dll. I looked up the dll and it said, "used to redirect links to ads". I rubbed my "Mr. Smither's" hands together, remarked "Excellent!".

For a JIC, I rebooted, opened IE, clicked a google link and was re-directed to ad. I responded with the Red Baron's "CURSES foiled again!" (from the snoopy song).

The batch file post to clear the DNS cache seems to have been the ticket (after you remove the virus). It made sense because I visit perhaps 20ish sites, a couple wikis, couple game and mostly coder sites. All are incredibly benign and I did not suspect treachery from any as all have been visited 100s of times.

But it was my repetitve nature that was the culprit that allowed the DNS cache to work (at least that's what I think in hind-sight).

Only more time will tell for sure but my first 10 google clicks worked properly whereas I was hitting an ad about 35-50% of the time before the DNS flush.

So I think this is resolved. Added this as a confirmation to those who may, like me, go what the heck? when they DNS thing was posted. I write software and had no idea we had a DNS cache. Thanks for the info all!

I also have an Asus EEE PC, 160GB Hard Drive, with Operating System: Windows XP Home, etc.

Please plug in the USB drive with the programs into one of the USB ports.

• Start the Netbook
• At the bottom of the screen you see and press the following: Press F2 to enter Setup
• In the screen that appears, use the arrow key that goes right to get to the Boot section.
• Now, select the Boot Device Priority
• You should see Removable Device as one of the options, or, the actual USB drive you plugged in may show.
• Select the USB drive if identified, or, if not, the Removable Device, and make it the first device to use upon booting. (Follow the instructions to the right of the screen to do this.)
• Next, press Esc (Escape) on the keyboard to get out of the Boot section.
• Use the right arrow to get to the Exit section.
• Here, select Exit and Save Changes, and press the Enter key.
• Let the computer press on and see if it boots from the USB drive.

Any luck with the above?

If no luck, did you format the USB drive before downloading the Kaspersky programs?
What is the brand name of the USB drive?



Also, please refresh my memory, after you remove the USB flash drive, are you able to boot normally, or, into Safe Mode, after tapping the F8 key, while the computer is starting?

Or, is it bsod no matter what you do?
