Jon Peddie Research (JPR) released its Q3 2008 figures for the GPU market today. Despite the slowing economy, the GPU industry continues to grow. This has been a general trend for the tech industry throughout 2008, and may reflect the international nature of the business. The United States accounts for a tremendous percentage of worldwide IT spending, but the big growth markets for the likes of Intel, AMD, Dell, and HP are in the Asia-Pacific region or the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) countries.
According to JPR, over one third of all PCs shipping today feature more than one GPU. That fact is helping to push the number of GPU's shipped to record numbers, but it doesn't mean everyone is jumping on the SLI bandwagon. More often than not, a dual-GPU computer will be a system with seperate integrated and discrete solutions, though both AMD and NVIDIA have taken steps to combine the performance of the two. Total GPU shipments for the third quarter in 2008 was some 111 million units, up 22.5 percent from the 91 million units shipped in Q3 2007.
One reason may be the increased performance requirements of Vista, a lot of people would be going for a good graphics card. nVidia™ FTW! Thanks for this article.
