GTX 470 - WHat CPU and MB

Ok I am getting a geForce GTX 470 and now need a new CPU and MB

I am not a hardware wizard so how do these look

Hmmm.

Definitely go for the Intel Core i5 750.

No strong ones.

They're all worthy CPUs. The I5-750 is older, without hyperthreading, but it's quad core. Th I5-6xx CPUs support onboard graphics, when combined with an H55 or H57 chipset. (You don't care about that.) I'd probably go with the 750 because of its performance in multithreaded applications (not games).

If you're interested in overclocking, consider the new I5-655k and I7-875k. (I don't know if they're available in SA yet.) They are the first Intel CPUs I know of that combine a mainstream price with unlocked CPU multipliers.

I like my Socket 1366 system, but it's more expensive. In the USA, an I5-750 plus a decent S. 1156 mainboard may be had for less than $300. The least expensive S. 1366 I7 is about $300, and mainboards are $150 and up. You'd probably spend more on RAM for the S. 1366 system as well, as it supports triple-channel rather than the dual-channel of the S. 1156 systems. (Triple channel isn't mandated, but you may as well go for that third RAM module.)

I've never owned an Intel mainboard, because I've always wanted ones that permit overclocking. (I believe that newer Intel boards no longer block that.) Most of the boards I've purchased have been from Asus, but I've been happy enough with Abit (no longer in the business) and DFI. You may do well to avoid the extreme low-end generics (PCChips is one name they're sold under), but there are respectable bargain brands like Foxconn and ECS that sell a lot of boards to appliance PC makers (like HP).
