Hard disk space missing @ Intel X25-M G2 + W7

Hello

I recently purchased an Intel X18-M G2 80GB and installed Windows 7 on it. So far, so good.
First thing I installed afterwards was World of Warcraft and I then noticed that I had very little free space left on the drive - less than 25 GB i.e. about 50 GB used.

If I mark all the folders (with show hidden files and folders enabled) and it informs me that the total amount of space used is 32 GB.

Where did the last 23 GB go? I've disabled the System Restore and it freed up about 5.5 GB, so I now have about 30 GB free, and the total amount of storage used according to folder properties is 25 or so GB.

:( Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Download TreeSize Free and run it. However, don't be alarmed or concerned with the C:\windows\winsxs folder. It will appear very large, but is really just hard links to files elsewhere. Primarily use this tool to find directories outside of C:\windows that are large.

I too have the Intel X25 Gen 2...I just have the M edition. With Win7, about a dozen software apps (Open Office being the largest) and Wolfenstein installed, I have about 53GB free.

I have a second drive on my system that I use for downloads and storage.

Upon installation, things I did
--turn system restore down to 1% of hard drive
--move page file from C:\ to my D:\ drive
--disable hibernate (powercfg -h off)
--moved my IE and Firefox caches to my D drive.

Is the 80GB a decimal or a binary 80. The system shows the capacity in binary which is a 7% lower number than it would be in decimal. So there goes 5.6GBs.
Then, in order to get a real picture of how much is installed, you should run WinDirStat ( WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics ).
Last: How do you like the X25 SSD. I was considering buying one. I am currently using an OCZ Vertex 60GB.

I've been very happy with my Intel X25-M. It's the first SSD drive for me. I haven't noticed 1 bit of stutter with it. My game load times are much better than they were before. And overall, just running with 2 hard drives has improved everything. Now my Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB is just storage so any file manipulations that I do are running much better as it's also not handling my running OS.

80gb hd is very small these days. You could have saved yourself money by getting a much larger one.

Dont forget that every hard disk has a cache buffer which is either 16mb or 32mb so that takes some away from the total even before you've formatted it. Then there are system files like pagefile and MTF and boot files.

Also, don't forget that SSD drives are extremely fast and expensive as well. An 80GB SSD costs almost $300 these days...and the 160's have been running over $500.

80GB is fine for most OS's and applications as long as you store your data files and such on a separate hard drive in your computer. I'm living proof, I'm happily running on an 80GB C drive with less than 50% used with some careful planning and handling of data and I get the advantage of a super fast hard drive that makes my computer extremely fast, with no noise, no heat and hardly any power consumption.

I'm not a complete idiot. The mentioned size IS missing. The disk, like an above poster mentioned isn't 80 GB in reality, which is why Windows lists it as 75 GB.

I'll try the software you suggested, thanks :)

Pagefile.sys : 12 GB, even though I have the pagefile turned off completely.
Hiberfile.sys: 9 GB - I don't user hibernate, my computer can boot in 20 seconds anyway.

Are they both safe to delete?

Apparently the pagefile had turned itself back on, and to get rid of the hiberfil.sys I wrote powercfg.exe -h off in the commando prompt, problem solved :)

do you have pagefile set to computer manage pagefile in system control panel?

One way to keep its size small is to set it to 64mb and set it. then set no page file to the other drives

But is there a point to having a 64MB pagefile?

I heard having no page file would give improvements, when you have a lot of ram. I got 12GB

some apps require a pagefile or they will not run. if you are very concerned about disk space a smalle file would save the space while maintaining the presence of a pagaefile.
