Having a hard time getting all of my icons to fit on the desktop

I am not able to get all of my icons to fit properly on my desktop. In Windows Vista they fit perfectly. Are there any adjustments that I can make to get the icons to fit?

How many icons do you have?

I can't see why Vista would allow more icons than Windows 7.

I use the CTRL Scroll Wheel method myself. After doing so and after arranging icons to taste, I recommend right clicking on a bank spot on the desktop, then clicking on Refresh to help lock in the size and position of the icons.

To avoid filling up my C: drive and for better organization (my concept of organization, not necessarily anyone else's), I put files in what will be their final destination folder, then put a shortcut on my desktop to link me to that file. That way it's in my face where I can't ignore or forget about it until I'm finished with the document or folder (with my learning disabilities, I need all the help I can get in that department) yet I still keep it off my C: drive; sometimes it's just more convenient to have one click access for a folder or document I access frequently.

For pretty much the same reason, I have shortcuts on my desktop to folders on my E: drive that I use for temporary parking places so I won't have files landing on my C: drive. This especially handy when I'm doing a lot of document scanning. It allows me to scan uninterrupted instead of having to navigate to a filing location after each scan, especially when I have multiple groups of documents that go into the same folders; it saves me the hassle of manually presorting the documents before scanning. It also makes it easier for me to access documents that need some modifying before being sent to their final resting place (pun intended).

One way to organize the clutter of icons on the Desktop is to create folders and then move the icons into the folders. For instance, create a folder called games and put all of the icons associated with games in that folder.

I go a step further and create a Desktop toolbar (right-click on Taskbar, select Toolbars->Desktop). I then hide the icons on my desktop so my Desktop is completely clean. I can then use the Desktop Toolbar on the Taskbar as a menu to access all of the icons I have on my Desktop. One great advantages of this method is that I can access all of the icons on my Desktop without ever going to the desktop!

If you cannot see your desktop objects (shortcuts/icons, folders, files) as easily as you would like, then changing their size using the first tutorial that Bongo posted might help you. Changing the size does change how many items you can get in one row or one column.

If you like the current size of things, then you might want to consider adjusting the spacing between each desktop item (icon). Perhaps Barman58 knows of a tutorial for doing that. If not, I'll detail the steps later.

To avoid the clutter on my desktop, I make a new folder and name it SELDOM USED PROGRAMS,
then when I have too many icons on the desktop, I drag the ones that I hardly ever use to that folder..
then when I need one of them, simply open the seldom used programs folder, and there it is.
