Heads up for those using XP with MSE

There is one MSE update at the end of important updates for the last of XP. If you download it you will find out that not only is MSE without further support, the update shuts down MSE completely and blocks access to restart it. I got caught with my VM XP so unchecked update on regular OS and MSE still works for that one.

I thought MSE was going to support XP for another 3 months beyond April 8th.

TBH I haven't booted up my XP VM to check.

On my XP VM, MSE reports my PC is at risk since support for the OS has ended. However, I was able to download the latest virus & spyware definitions, real-time protection is still active and I am able to run scans.

I went ahead and uninstalled MSE and installed the free version of Bitdefender.

PCs running Windows XP after April 8, 2014 should not be considered to be truly protected.

After support ends for Windows XP on April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates for Windows XP to help protect your PC against malware.

On this same date, Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP.

If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed when support ends for Windows XP, you will continue to receive Microsoft Security Essentials updates for a limited time to help identify malware on your PC. You can also still get the Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows XP for a limited time through Windows Update and the Download Center.
