HELP!! internet drops...

critical3

New member
ok i posted before thinking it was my nforce controller causing internet drops.. well before i had no problems..

anyways not i have a routed wired connection through a linksys router..

1 pc = Win7 64bit
1pc = Win XP 32bit

before when it was XP to XP no problems at all!!

now that its win7 to xp when both comps are on the connection drops a lot, every 2-3minutes!

for some reason i just now noticed this

ive tried dissabling RSS, ipv6, install drivers, try the dhcp flag in regedit, upgrade router firmware etc and so on...

does anyone know the fix for this?? should i install win7 on other comp to fix it??

Couple of questions...

routers make and model

are you running any anti virus and/or firewall on the systems

is your network on a static ip or are the ips being established by the router?

You made a second post ok. Your router is pretty old and I can't seem to find it on the list.
There is a firmware update dated back to 02, may be worth a try who knows.

Linksys by Cisco - BEFSR41W Support

Yes that thing is a relic. You could try to assign the IP's manually but it still may not work.

The BEFSR41 is pretty generic wired router. No wireless. I have three at my office I use for testing small networks. About the only thing that I don't like about them is they tend to lose DHCP leases. Later firmware was better though. They're not very fast but they shouldn't be causing the kinds of trouble he's having unless he's running really *old* firmware. The last version posted for it seems to be pretty stable for me.

I am not saying that it may or it may not be the problem but i wont' rule it out as being "one" of the issues...

I would suggest to that guy to borrow another router and see what he gets out of that but defitily make sure his settings on both computers are correct becuase it would be a waste of time to borrow a router and then it not work cause of the settings....

do you know anyone with a spare that is one on the list?

i gave you a link to compatable routers on microsofts web page.

see if that will do the trick as well.

Can yo static IP your computers for us so we can do some ping tests.

If you need help.... I'll be more than happy to write down the instructions.

never messed with static ip? i know you goto ip4 settings and input the info but dont know how to do the DNS part??

My Computer

First thing we need to find out is your dns:

Open up "cmd" using run or search; however you want to do it.

Type: Ipconfig /all *hit enter*

you will see your dns numbers during the same network card you use to connect your modem through

next thing you need to tell me is the:

Gateway:
Might say something like this:

192.168.0.1
192.168.1.1
192.168.2.1

thats usually the america protocol...
If your outside of the states, it will say gateway to the left.

Please inform me on your settings

think ive figured it out.. 192.168.1.1 is gateway for this comp via router

i found out how to get primary and secondary DNS thru router status

im gonna setup 2nd pc and see what happens

My Computer

OS
win 7
Lets do this since probaby your router made your ips either .100 or .2

PRIMARY (WINDOWS 7):
IP: 192.168.1.10
SUBNET: 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1

DNS:
DNS 2:

SECONDARY (WINDOWS XP):
IP: 192.168.1.11
SUBNET: 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1

DNS:
DNS 2:

REMEMBER IF YOU HAVE ANY ISSUES, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT THE NEXTWORK CONFIGURATION BACK TO OBTAIN AUTOMATICALLY AND THAT WILL FIX IT AGAIN...

YOU HAVE TO PUT THAT DNS IN BOTH BOXES OR YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO VIEW WEB PAGES.

Honestly,
I would. It actually makes things alot easier.

Because it defines the computer and helps us to work on your computers so we can tell you how to fix it, ping it, umm find it on the network things like that.

I have actually seen improvements when i have made all my computers static. Also, your router has a DHCP release so with static you dont have to worry abut that. Your ip stays the same all the time.

Incase yo guys play network games, which is a big games, to connect one another... you would use your IPs.

let me know when everything is up and running and we can do some tests.
