Also, i need to know if you are running any type of firewalls... like norton 360, internet security, ect.
on either or computers....

and we may need to do some other things as well with the router.

I like to set u your network first between both computers first. Make sure they are working.. and then lets see if the internet still drops, if it still drops and your able to network, we can actually do process of elimiation and more then likely be the router...

but your saying the router was working with xp... so we may have to check your windows 7 settings.

What i need to know is exactly how you want your nextwork... do you want sharing.. printers or you just want internet only?

the befsr41 is pretty generic wired router. No wireless. I have three at my office i use for testing small networks. About the only thing that i don't like about them is they tend to lose dhcp leases. Later firmware was better though. They're not very fast but they shouldn't be causing the kinds of trouble he's having unless he's running really *old* firmware. The last version posted for it seems to be pretty stable for me.

do you work on alot of window 7 computers with this router? Or were they previous versions..... I know the os just came out.

I had one W7 system on a BEFSR41. All in all I've had everything from Linux, W2K, WXP, Vista, one W7 system and some stuff with embedded IP stacks.

The BEFSR41 had issues with DHCP. I remember having to reboot the router to get it recovered.

I'tll be interesting to see how stable his connections are after switching to static IP.

What i normally do if a thread is solved is report it as solved. That little icon to the right or the rep scale icon allow u to do this. ;)

You made a second post ok. Your router is pretty old and I can't seem to find it on the list.
There is a firmware update dated back to 02, may be worth a try who knows.

Linksys by Cisco - BEFSR41W Support

Yes that thing is a relic. You could try to assign the IP's manually but it still may not work.

I guess my first post on the first page had some merit. The compatiblity list is fairly accurate I'd say as was my original analogy of the problem. I'm not sure what more I could have done other than go to the Op's house and change out the router myself. In a nutshell, if your router dosn't appear on the Win 7 compatiblity list there is little chance that it will work correctly. ;)
