HELP! Unable to install takeownership.reg UAC is turned off!

Im very new to all of this and I was following the instructions to a tutorial on how to change the sound that you hear at the login page and I needed to install takeownership for one of the steps. Unfortunately I have been unsuccessful with installing this. UAC is turned off... I am able to download it. Unzip it. But not able to install. Plz Help. Tell me what I am doing wrong or what steps Im missing or need to add.

Could you post back with a link to the tutorial that you are referring to for the logon sound?

Are you logged in as an administrator?

Are you getting any type of error message?

How does it work if you turn on UAC, and try afterwards?

Unfortunately I am unable to find that tutorial link. I've been so caught up trying to install this takeownership program. I am logged in as administrator. If I remember correctly I needed to download three things in order to change my startup sound. Audacity, Resource Hacker, and Takeownership. So far I've successfully converted my sound file as .wav @299kb. As for the other steps I can't remember too frustrated with not being able to install takeownership. When I unzip takeownership and try to install I don't get an error msg but my notepad pops up and reads....

I tried the take ownership short cut with the same outcome as b4, it did not instal and my notepad popped up with a similar msg if not the same as I had copied & pasted on here in my last post.

I also followed the steps in the tutorial that was recommended and I received this msg Access is denied. 0 files copied.

Question: In step 15 it states to move and save original imageres.dll to a safe location. I was able to do that. But what happens to the new imageres.dll file that was just created by resource hacker? Where should I place this file or should I just leave it on my desktop? I tried to place it back from its copied location but was denied access there as well.

It sounds like you have .reg files set to "Open with" notepad by mistake. Double check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

You would want to leave the new modified imageres.dll file on your desktop. You would then use steps 17 to 23 in the tutorial to replace the original Windows\System32\imageres.dll file with the new modified imageres.dll file on your desktop at boot. It can only be done at boot like this, or you would get the access denied "in use" message.

Yaaay I've finally successfully downloaded AND INSTALLED take ownership!!!!! Thank You BRINK for your time and patience. Sincerely thank you. That was the problem I was openning it with the wrong program. Okay but that was only part 1.

Still trying for part 2 of my problem. The main reason why I started to download audacity resource hacker and take ownership. I'll try this again a lil later. But thanx again BRINK!

Hello Corazon,

Not a stupid question at all.

The startup sound is not the same as the log on sound.

The "Windows Logon" sound you would be able to change through Sounds in the Control Panel.

The startup sound is protected, and can only be changed using the method in the tutorial.
