Home/End key does not work when opening folder in explorer

In XP when you open a folder and want to select the file at the top or bottom I usually press the Home or End key.

When you do this in Windows7 it does not hi-lite the text, it just ghosts the selection.

What is going on there? Does anyone know a way round it?

When you first open a folder, hit spacebar and it selects the first item. End selects the last item for me, even if its the first action you do in the folder. Once any item is selected Home and End go to top and bottom respectively as in XP.
