I have had Start and/or Restart problems since June 2010. Windows would stop with no error message at the Starting Windows Screen. I could do a "REPAIR" and it would start/restart about 10 times before stopping. I determined if I removed the battery the problem went away. I got a new battery which did not help. I installed new RAM, no help with battery installed and I installed a new CMOS Battery which worked for about 10 starts/restarts with the battery installed. Took the battery out and about 2 weeks ago start problem occurred again. I had to use REPAIR DISK to do REPAIR and it would start/restart about 10 times then hang. I just finished doing a Easy File Xfer to my 320GB external drive and reinstalled Win 7, all Windows updates, all Lenovo Updates, restored from external drive and reinstalled my SW. STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM!!

Did you wipe the HD before clean reinstalling? The boot sector may have corruption that needs overwriting. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91339-ssd-hdd-optimize-windows-reinstallation.html

Check that you have the latest BIOS update. Consider reflashing the latest BIOS if so. If not reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Test your RAM using memtest86 for 5-6 passes, check RAM timing, reseat RAM: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

Test your HD using maker's diagnostics/repair extended CD scan: HD Diagnostic

Check all cables and connections.

WIN 7 hOME Prem 32 bit Boot Problems

No, I did not do a "CLEAN INSTALL" I did a Custom Install to an existing system.
I reset the BIOS when I replaced the CMOS Battery.
I ran the Memtest.
I ran the HDD test.
I have installed new memory.
I have installed the latest BIOS 2.23
I ran SFC /scanall after a successful boot.
I plan to run it from cmd prompt when boot fails.
This re-install took nearly 10 hours to get all Windows Updates, Lenovo Updates, reinstall my programs/data, import my email accounts and email.
You did not mention running bootsect.exe which seems to fix some problems. Repair gives either a 0xa error or a 0x490 ERROR.
I really do not want to repeat the 10 hour re-install.

Hello roguecowboy, welcome to Seven Forums!

If you want to rule out everything possible, you can't do that doing a half-way job; if you don't do the wipe (secure erase) you may continue to have file system errors, after you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, have a look at this tutorial at the link below.

SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

DISKPART : At PC Startup

The old boot commands are obsolete in Windows 7, have a look at these instead.

Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

How to Mark a Partition as Active in Windows 7
   Note

Contrary to popular belief, doing a format with Windows 7 does not remove any data at all, it just checks for sector errors and marks the space to be over-written as needed, all the data is still there including all the code from previous/failed installation attempts.
