How do I change the location of my external hard drive from H: to I:

Somehow, I changed the location of my external hard drive from the I: drive to the H: drive. When I click on my external hard drive under the H: drive, all it shows is the H: hard drive shortcut. When I click on the shortcut, it says that the H: drive cannot be located.

I tried to find it under the I: drive, but it cannot find an I: drive.

Is there any way I can change it back to my I: drive? Will I be able to get my backup files back?

Hi Shawn, thanks for your quick reply. I did not see this tutorial while researching the problem. It was a huge help, however, I ran into a snag. It did not show my I or H drive. Since I was not familiar with the terminology, I attached a shot of the screen. It came out blurry, but if you enlarge it,the print is clear. Now what?

Screenshot shows "system reserved" , win7 os, and recovery partition. All not what you meant. No media in disk 1??

Was it connected while you took the pic.

In the future, you should never change the letter of a hard drive once your pc has grabbed it. This applies for a drive with data on it. If it`s blank you can change it if you really feel the need.

What is Disk 1 Removable G: ????

In your lower part of disk management I don't see a CD/DVD is loaded! But in upper part it is. Strange.

Disk 1 is external, isn't it? It's type can be "basic" or "dynamic". But In your screenshot it's "Removable (G)"

What are these "no media", "removable" drives on my system?

Do you here a "beep" if you attach the external hard drive? And can you "safely remove hardware"? So usb external was recognized?

Have you turned off your PC, since this happened?
If not, you should turn it off and unplug the external drive.
The drive letters should become available once you turn the PC back on, as Windows may reset them.
If hot-plugging is enabled, you can plug in your external drive and try to correct the drive letter.

You can also try connecting the external drive to another computer and see whether the drive appears in Computer and can be opened and see the files.

Now reboot your system, open Computer window and connect the external drive. In a short while the drive should appear inside the computer, under "Devices with removable Storage". Open the drive and check for your files.
