How do I completely wipe a computer?

Hey, so I'm currently in the process of selling my computer and I want to delete everything from it, however I do no have the Windows CD which came with it as I received the computer as a gift a few years ago. I understand that you can download a licensed program on the windows website which replaces the need for a CD but I do not understand the process you must follow.

If someone could be as kind as to walk me through the steps of completely wiping the computer I'd be forever grateful.
