How many IEs should be running?

I notice as soon as I start IE, I have like 4 or 5 iexplorer.exe tasks running even if I only have one session/tab running.. The main one jumps up to a hundred meg or so, but the others just sit around 8 or 9 megs.. I can kill them manually with the task manager, but eventually they all pop back up.. I have repeatedly scanned for malware, but nothing shows up..

How many IEs should be running?

In a related note: is there a way to sandbox IE so when I quit it everything gets deleted and I will never get malware? Or at least when I quit IE it deletes all my TempInternetFiles? I would love that..

I tried turning off cookies, but I can't log into many places unless I have cookies turned on.. With cookies on, the next thing you know, you get scour... :devil:

Ctrl-Shift-P will turn on InPrivate browsing, which is about as close to a sandbox as you are going to get. But you are better advised to just avoid those types of places on the interwebz...

When you have no IE browsers running, check your task manager and verify you have no iexplore processes running. Start IE and see how many spawn.

Hmm.. Even browsing with In Private has no effect, I still get re-directed when doing a search..
Exremely annoying.. The sites I visit are so few I have no idea how this happened..

If you talk about the IE processes you see in task manager, there is only one active if you have only one IE open. The others are cached from previous sessions. They do no harm and are dorment until you call the exact same IE occurence. They also disappear when the cached RAM is needed for active processes.

Have a look in the colored bar of Resource Monitor > Memory tab. The dark blue RAM area is where they reside.

But that is not what is happening.. When I start IE, I get four iexplorer.exe processes in the task manager.. If I close the IE program the other three iexplorer.exe processes are still there.. I have to manually stop them.. If IE is running and I stop them, they respawn..

It seems like I should have one iexplorer.exe process for each IE window/tab running..

You worry too much. As I said, they are cached and don't do anything. Proof - when you stop them, nothing negative happens.
