How much layered security?

the dummy

New member
I am running 7 64, sandboxie, returnil, 7 firewall, lua, dep, and just added mse to the mix. Now i was thinking about adding spywareblaster-winpatrol-immunet-or threatfire also, but ive read mse allready has a bb or hipps so im not sure if this will cause a conflict? So what should i add or not to complete me?

This is serious overkill, shed some of that flab. All you need is a good realtime AV (say MSE) plus a firewall (the builtin firewall does a perfectly good job, though 3rd parties are also pretty good) plus an on-demand scanner (like MBAM or Hitman).

I like Winpatrol mainly for it's start up control. But security wise you really don't need much else and the only thing I would add is a decent backup, either windows inbuilt or something like Drive snapshot, Acronis, Macrium etc....

And with that setup you could easily run without a realtime AV.

Thanks for the replies. I dont want to go overboard, but was wondering what others thought on the layered approach. However does anyone know if mse would conflict with winpatrol, or threatfire?

No, mse wont conflict with anything.

I think Returnil AND Sandboxie is overkill. But tell the truth, if you aren't having resource issues, slow downs, or conflicts. Unless it's a chore to maintain, leave it be. But adding more would be severe overkill. The same would hold true though...if it all plays well together, and doesn't make your life a huge chore...

I run MSE and ThreatFire free, and for on-demand scans I have MBAM, SuperAntiSpyware, and Hitman Pro 3.5. No viruses yet, in almost one year of ownership, and I am online all the time.:geek:

Kaspersky (as far as I know) has either done a TREMENDOUS job, or I haven't done enough to give myself a virus. I almost WANT a virus just to see if Kaspersky is actually doing it's job lol.

Ahhh, but for you, Threatfire would add some different security. If you use Comodo Defense+ then Threatfire will "fill the gaps" so to speak, of what Defense+ might not catch (that's might not). If you notice no conflicts or slow downs, then Threatfire couldn't hurt. A Guy

Ive decided to keep mse, sandboxie, returnil, superantispyware, malwarebytes, seven firewall, uac, and surf from my guest account only. I figure it doesnt really matter what a/v, firewall or browser i use since nothing seems to be able to get past sandboxie and returnil anyways, so i might as well use the a/v and browser which intergrates with win 7 64 the best .

I would recommend you have a look at imaging, it is very simple to set up & use. I have restored to images numerous times without any problems on Windows Seven, Vista & XP i have always found System restore problematic & most times ended in a clean install.

There are a number of imaging options available, i was introduced to Macrium and been very happy with it that i have never had a reason to look at other options but the choices are yours

I do have restore points, is this enough?
The system restore facility of windows has always been "capricious", to say the least. I would not bet my life on it. Plus, any well written virus can disable it and then you are stuck.
Restoring from an image on the other hand runs completely independent from the operating system (off-line so to speak) and cannot be compromised by any outside source.
The reason I recommend Macrium for the task is because I found Macrium to be one of the easiest imaging programs around. But there are fine other options - you may just need a bit longer to understand their mode of operation.

Try running all of the test viruses and spyware from Eicar and Spycar.

eicar | THE ANTI-VIRUS OR ANTI-MALWARE TEST FILE

Welcome to Spycar

If your current anti-malware programs don't detect and/or block these test files (especially the .zip files and https files from Eicar) then you might want to reconsider your choice of programs.
