How 'One Microsoft' mission is changing Microsoft Research

Cultural changes at Microsoft over the past year-plus are reverberating throughout the company, including across the company's 1,100-plus-strong Microsoft Research arm.

Since last July's "One Microsoft" reorganization," things have gotten friendlier" between different teams at the company, including Microsoft Research (MSR) said Corporate Vice President and MSR chief Peter Lee. "There's more of a communal feel."

I had a chance to chat with Lee during an open house at Microsoft Research New York's new digs on May 5. The open house was held in honor of the two-year anniversary of the New York lab, which Microsoft created around a core of former Yahoo researchers that the company hired.

So far it looks like thing are going in the right direction.
Keeping corporate security tight seem to be in question.
Directing department to work with other departments with in Microsoft seems on the surface a good thing.

I'm I understanding that article correctly?

Hi there

Sorry to be the "5th player in a string quartet" but when it comes to large corporations it's the sheer diversity and difference of opinions that drive research (possibly egos too) and the whole corporation forwards.

Now HOW this is managed is the art -- you don't want open warfare breaking out all over the place and there has to be some sort of Corporate identity spirit and purpose -- but trying to create a "sickly One Size fits all Happty Family" IMO is a recipe for disaster.

Sometimes to ensure progress you HAVE to step out of line and take a risk. That's what GOOD management should be about -- we can all manage a Herd of Sheep but a Pack of Wolves requires a different skill set.

I understand what Ms is trying to do -- but so long as they don't kill the sparks of creativity that the NEXT generation needs then OK.

I've seen too much "Dumbing down" -- even at some Church services where they've abandoned some really great music "because it was too difficult to sing " !!!! and dumbed it down to some awful tuneless drivel which neither makes you feel what the purpose of the service is intended to be or likely to inspire more people to attend the congregation in future.

So Ms don't make everything follow "the one size fits all" model.

(A good example for non church going people who might not understand my "music comment" -- just look at the sheer WRETCHEDNESS of todays TV - a few rare exceptions but most of it is bland, boring and predictable).
