Solved How to change from 32 bit to 64 bit on win 7 when it is compatible

Maybe the reason why the option came is because when we bought the laptop we got a free upgrade to 8gb ram from 4gb ram. I' not sure but hope this piece of info helps. Thanks!

Its intel core i7. 2.70ghz. 8gb ram(2.66gb uable). windows 7 professional 32 bit.

Toshiba is the OEM. I did some R&D and indeed some Toshiba notebooks ship with the option to choose 32 bit or 64 bit. Whats probably happening is that the system launches a full out of the box recovery at first boot (did you see the Recovery wizard?) and installs the bit you selected. Instead of having windows already installed in either bit. This is somewhat strange but whatever.

I stand corrected.

If that is the case, the recovery partition is capable of "recovering" to 64 bit, so try launching the Recovery wizard (whatever its called) manually and see if it offers the 64 bit option. Best to backup your data first.

Sorry the windows 7 was already pre installed and not on a DVD.

Wow! A lot of useful information on that page! thx!! btw if I choose to do a "Restore original factory image", will it delete all programs that I had preinstalled with the laptop? thx for ur help!

It will be exactly like it came from the factory, with the programs it shipped with.

Back up your data and gather your other program installers first.

Afterwards Clean up factory bloatware
