How to show icons on desktop, for files that are actually on D drive

Hello everyone

I have a bunch of files and folders sitting on my Desktop so that I can get to them easily and so that I don't forget about them. I tend to forget about stuff if the icons aren't visible, and these files relate to important tasks that I should not forget. However, ideally (e.g. for backup purposes) these files should not be on the C: drive, on the Desktop, but in a single parent folder on the D: drive. So, I want to see the icons on the Desktop as if the files are there on the Desktop, but I don't want the files to be actually on the Desktop. What solutions can you think of?

In Windows XP, I would simply drag their parent folder to the edge of the Desktop, and Windows would then create a toolbar that shows all the files and folders. However, Windows 7 dropped this feature. I also know that one can create a toolbar on the Windows 7 taskbar, but my taskbar is already full (despite being three icons deep and situated along the longest edge of my portrait screen), and there's no room for yet another toolbar on it.

I don't want to simply create shortcuts to all the files because then I would have to remember to create new shortcuts for new files, and I'm prone to forget. Simply using shortcuts would also make it difficult to move new files to that location (I'd have to move the file to the D: drive folder manually and then remember to create a shortcut to it to the Desktop again).

I was wondering if there was a way to "stick" an open folder to the Desktop, so that the folder is permanently open and sittting in a certain location on the screen, with its content always visible. Sticking the open folder to the Desktop should also prevent other icons from being placed behind the folder. It would in essence be a rectangular kind of folder "widget" that sits on the Desktop somewhere.

It would appear that the "Folder Portals" feature of StarDoc Fences is a partial solution, if you don't use the Classic theme (which I use).

Nimi Places actually gets closer to it (tis a pity Nimi Places use icons and lettering that is different from what the user uses elsewhere on his desktop).
