HP recalls 70,000 laptop batteries due to fire hazard

It’s been a while since we last heard of a major battery recall, but after experiencing some issues in recent months HP has decided to issue a voluntary recall of about 70,000 Li-ion batteries that shipped with several of its laptop models. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the move today, claiming that there have been two reported incidents where the batteries overheated and ruptured, resulting flames and a fire that caused minor property damage but no injuries.

Yes, many do.
In all my 29 years of experience working on PC's, I have no real problem with HP computers and now with Compaq computers, since they are owned by the same corp. However they ARE a little over-priced, so they wouldn't be my first choice.

Even HP printers are as good quality as any other, but the printer software is pure garbage. I encourage all my customers to NOT buy an HP printer.
Since I'm a factory trained EPSON tech, I'm slightly partial to them. Their software is well written, installs easily and runs great.

Back to shutdown problems, , , I had one little HP tower that would sometimes shut down by itself. While working on it I decided to add a small case fan since the cpu seemed to be running kind of warm. With the case fan connected the PC would not start up. Without the fan, the PC started up (booted) normally. That proved to me that the PSU was failing.
I installed a new PSU and the problem was solved.

So adding an extra load to a suspected PSU is an easy way to troubleshoot a marginal PSU. Fans, HD's or any device that draws power can be used to add extra load to a PSU, to see if it fails.
