Huge problems with Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0.

This software has just about caused me to burst a blood-vessel through sheer frustration. It continually freezes for minutes on end, triggered by such hugely demanding actions as dragging and dropping a short MP3 clip into timeline and, er, saving my project. Sometimes it doesn't come out of the freeze and I have to kill the process. Last time I did this, the autosave failed to operate and I lost half an hour's worth of work. The video preview is also marred by an infrequent black flicker which occurs if I set it to anything above Draft mode.

By all accounts, this software is meant to be great and I haven't heard tell of many other users having problems with it. My computer is in good working order (as far as I can tell!) and I'm not experiencing problems with any other software. My spec is adequate for HD video editing (take a look).

So, what's going on here?! This is driving me up the wall, plus I have a wedding film to edit in the near future, so I need to get to the bottom of it.

Thanks for your response, much appreciated! Unfortunately, my problem isn't the memory cap. I have Windows 7 and I'm using version 11.0 of the software, so the memory cap isn't an issue. I've tried giving the program high priority using Task Manager, and allocating more RAM to the preview, but it still isn't working properly. I can't help thinking that this isn't a memory-related issue, even though it looks like one.

Freezing is unusual for Vegas. Usually it crashes with some sort of error message. On my system (Win7-64, nVidia graphics) it runs fine.

Have you tried de-installing and re-installing from scratch? Use some sort of de-installer that cleans out registry entries to ensure you start over with a truly clean install. I have Windows 7 and I'm using version 11.0 of the software, so the memory cap isn't an issue.

Despite it does look so, it could well be actually a memory issue.

• You appear to run Windows 7 64bit. You don't tell the build of your VMSHDP11 (Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0). According to the Every time I try to Render it says - An error occurred site, builds 0-282 of Movie Studio, all versions (simple, Platinum, Suite), when running in the 64bit version of Windows 7, will use only 2GB hence will freeze with very mundane HD editing tasks; so, 1st thing to do is IMO to update (free) to the latest build of your VMSHDP11, currently 322.
  
• Your system has only 4GB. With current prices and current apps, even if you weren't editing HD video or playing games, before anything you should IMO upgrade to at least 8GB ($69.99 on Crucial "Memory Advisor" > Fujitsu Esprimo P9900 0-Watt).
  
• If ever the problem continued after these 2 updates, I would recommend to try the same task with the latest (currently build 896) 64bit TRIAL version of VMSPS (Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Suite, overview, download).
