I thought I read some where that you could only upgrade from vista home premium to w7 home premium. I have three computers and would like to take advantage of the presale offer.

I am thinking of purchasing one W7 Pro and one W7 Home Premium preorder upgrade. My concern is trying to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro.

I don't care if I have to do a clean install as I prefer that method anyways.

I am only buying two because I am planning on replacing one of the computers anyways which will come with windows 7.

If I Purchase the upgrades will I be able to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro?

AFAIK the "upgrade" only requires that you have a existing version of vista installed. It doesnt care what edition it is.

Which thread? There are a couple of them and I still see conflicting responses. Plus the info tends to bounce around.

I would appear that to "upgrade" you have to go from VHP to W7HP but if you go from VHP to W7Pro you would have to do a clean install.

I don't want to purchase W7 Pro and then realize I can't install it on my Vista Home Premium computer.

That sounds logical. However the current speculation is that you will be able to do a clean install using the upgrade media.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
I don't mind doing a clean install. In fact I prefer a clean install.

My only concern is that I can't upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro.

Well it doesn't really make cents for Microsoft to prevent you from upgrading HP to Pro or Ultimate.

It does matter what version if you want to upgrade without having to do a clean install .

The upgrade doc seems to be missing in action on the microsoft site but you can view it here.
