I am trying to shrink the volume size which contains the OS. win 7 64b

started with a 500 gig hard drive, was able to shrink it to half. My goal is a partition size of 100 gb. The entire contents of drive is less than 50 gb. I did away with the page file so as not to cause a problem as a none move able file. No hyber.sys file either.

So right now the size of the partition is about 238 gb, but when I try to shrink it further it tells me that it can only be shrank by 7 more megs. any suggestions

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Windows 7's disk management is very basic in that it will only let you shrink a partition once, as you've just found out.

A far better bet is the Easeus Partition Wizard bootable CD: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93322-partition-wizard-use-bootable-cd.html

Download the ISO and burn the image to a blank CD.

The reason the system partition won't shrink any further is that there are system files parked in the area you are wanting to reclaim. You mentioned the page file and hiberfile.sys; what about System Restore? It seems to like to park itself well away from the rest of the system files. If you get the system files moved, Windows will let you shrink the partition further.

Windows will allow you to shrink or grow a partition as many times as you wish, so long as there is adequate room for the files on the partition (or free space available, in the case of increasing the size of a partition).

I used MyDefrag (it's free) to defrag the system partition, and then used Windows to shrink the partition down to 60GB.

Thanks for all the info... I do not use system restore so that would not be the problem... However i did try the Partition wizard home edition, but not the bootable CD...just used it straight, and while the first try was a failure in that it did nothing but reboot...I tried it again and it shrank the drive to 100 gigs just as I requested...so far so go..thanks for the tip there seavixen32...
