As many here have been on the fence to upgrade to the Win10 platform I to was fighting all the way until earlier this year.

Yes, Win7 is stable but I was having issues with my browser and other software moving forward to the Win10 platform and so I upgraded and did a fresh clean install as I still had my FREE version waiting as I upgraded when Win10 first came out but diverted back to Win7 Ultimate because I just wasn't ready.

Fast forward April 10,2020
I actually thought it would kill me to use Win10 Pro but you know it was easier and less nail biting than I though.
It is definitely more stable and increased speed desktop speed is a pleasant surprise.
So yes. I'm happy..

I really hated MS Edge with a passion and used IE11 and Chrome until Microsoft finally why fight it and build their new Edge with the Chrome engine inside with a few mods.

If you want to stay with Win7 that is great and hope you continue with good luck.
For the folks on the fence the grass is greener on the other side and actually after a short learning curve you may be very surprised as I was.

PS This is coming from a very old fart who has been around the block even before Apple and Microsoft.
Just turn 70 and still have my sanity.
So come on and switch over and don't wait until you are 70 years old.

If you have any productive questions on the upgrade ask away.

The new Improved EDGE 2020
Hi Iggy. I've been to Arizona, and I love it, both the warm parts and cool parts.

You're still a youngster compared to me, and I still remember moving up from Tubes to Transistors.

One problem that so many folks have with Win-7, is that their PC's were never set up properly to begin with. Just out of the box, Windows can be a real Dog!
I'm a Computer tech of over 40 years, and I've taken service calls on a b'zillion PC's where the main complaint is, "it's running so slow!". And, it usually is.
My speciallity is "Performance and Security".

In performance, I can speed up most PC's by up to 100%, with just a few tweaks and adjustments.
MS puts out its OS's with an absolutely awful amount of what they call "Safe Defaults". To me, "Safe" means SLOW!

Also, Win-7, for instance, saves everything it does in a file somewhere. Eventually the whole PC will slow to a crawl, just dealing with all that saved 'Crap'.
So you install a new OS, and VOILA, your PC is so much faster. It's not the new OS, but it's the lack of years of Crap build up. Without good PC maintenance and CRAP removal, your new OS will slow down just like the old one did.

I've been running Win-7/Pro/32 here on my main PC since Win-7 first came out. The first thing I did after install was to kill off the Safe Defaults, shut down all unused and unneeded Services, and set up some daily maintenance, which I run from a Batch File in the Startup folder, that deletes all temp files, etc.

After I tune up a customer's PC, I get comments like "Dang! It didn't run that fast when it was new!"
All I can say is, "I know. It's what I do!"

Happy Easter!

I have heard TechnoMage2016 talk about mystically (hence why they call him TechnoMAGE2016) speeding up pcs but now I want to know how!

From TechnoMage to TechnoChicken:

You sound just like a friend of mine, also from Ontario.
He's also a retired PC tech, like me.

A few of my tweaks, I thought up myself, but a good share of them are "Out There" on the internet, for anyone looking for them. I've spent the past 30 years compiling my tweaks to speed up a PC.

I started trying to improve performance with DOS 2.0. I actually edited the Erso Bios for faster startup, on my first PC/XT. (clone)

Whenever I've tried to share some of my tweaks over the internet, there's always the 'Self Proclaimed Expert' who will come on saying "That won't work!" or some such negative BS.

What I HAVE done, for honest PC Tech's, is to just mail them my Utilities DVD. But I can't send them to Ca. because they don't seem to get past the border censors.
I thought it was bad when after hundreds of years of an open border, we now have to have a PassPort to just enter Ca.

Anyway, everything I do is out there on the internet for those who want to do a Search for it. But, not all in the same place.

Some of my batch files and scripts can be sent via email as texts.

Like this:
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 1

That's my Quick Shutdown shortcut for Win-7.

Iggy,
Just a question, as an afterthought.
When installing Win-10, what did you do about those HUGE Security holes?
I'm talking about WUDO and Cortana.

I have both of those 'documented'.

They are like leaving all the doors on your home OPEN for fresh air. You'll get the fresh air YES, but you'll also get the bugs, rats and home invaders.
Win-10 can be run with a fairly high level of security, but it doesn't come out of the box that way....it's something you have to work at.

Good Luck!
TM

PS: I have both Win-7 Pro and Win-10 Pro running here, on different PC's, and my Win-7 runs just as fast or faster than the Win-10. So, it's not the OS, but how you run it. I use the same Speed UP tweaks on Win-10 as Win-7. ;)

As we all know support for Windows 7 ended on January 14 and I put off upgrading to Windows 10.
The only Windows 10 computer I had was a laptop that I bought in September of 2019.
5 other computers were still Windows 7.
On January 15 I decided it to try the upgrade and selected a sacrificial computer and bang! it was now a Windows 10 computer!
So--that afternoon I did 3 more computers--NO PROBLEM.
The next morning I upgraded the last Windows 7 computer.

Absolutely no problems.

The reason I put off going to Windows 10 was I thought I would have to wipe the drives and start over. That could have been a lot of work. Well, obviously it was unnecessary.
So happy I did t.

Nice, I have been on the fence about updating to Windows 10...
I have my main PC a custom build I built myself... and a old 2008 Toshiba laptop...

both run Windows 7 ULTIMATE x64

if anything I plan to buy another identical 1TB HDD and get a friend to ghost the OS/BOOT HDD and try updating that HDD to Win10 and see what happens.. if I do at all.. Its too much trouble to do a fresh install all the config work I put into Windows 7..

any one else got advice?

I made the switch Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 Home, so far no issues and after installing classic shell, I'm liking it. Still have to purchase webcam and microphone. With the Stay At Home orders in place, I can't find a reasonably priced combo unit not sold out or backordered.

I am still kicking myself for waiting so long to change.

I'll be up front and admit that I was an early adopter, taking the free upgrade on a W7 laptop in August 2015. Took all of two weeks to adjust.

But I still have two machines on W7 (three if you count a VM) which are in regular use. I like to keep my personal finance spreadsheets on a machine that never goes on the web. That task is currently performed by the W7 PC in my specs. Up to a few years ago I used an XP laptop for that job, but then its lid hinges broke and I had to retire it.

I avoided W8/8.1 like the plague, but I even have that on a VM now (out of curiosity - still don't like it). I swap between OS so often that I hardly notice the differences now, beneath the veneer of the GUI they are more alike than you may think.

I also have W7 Pro on my System Two, and several W7 Hyper-V VMs. My other machines run Windows 10/11. Their specs are in my Ten Forums & Eleven Forum profiles.

and after installing classic shell, I'm liking it.

I'm guessing you meant Open-Shell as Classic Shell is no longer updated.

I got a new laptop and it came with Windows 10. I figured I may as well adjust, sooner being better than later.

After a lot of work, I ended up with something that looks and feels like Windows 7 with the help of Open-Shell, OldNewExplorer and a few other registry and settings changes.

Unrelated, but, voidtools Everything is a life-changer. It's (nothing) like Windows Search except it doesn't make you want to hurt yourself while you use it.

Also, Run window (win+r) saves time navigating mobile UI menus. E.g.:
Settings App>Apps>Apps & Features>Programs & Features
Run>appwiz.cpl

I still use Classic Shell, Open Shell is a fork of Classic.
You are correct in that it is not actively updated.
For searching I have used Locate32 for years, I'll take a look at Everything.

I started playing with Windows 10 when it was released in July 2015, and Version 1909 Build 18363 currently runs in 5 of my computers.

But I still have a love for Windows 7, so it runs in 2 of my computers, and it's set up to receive post-EOL updates, so it's okay to keep using (hopefully) until 2023.

I run "clean" installs of both operating systems, and I get rid of most of the bloatware that comes in Windows 10, and I do a lot of performance tweaking, so BSOD's and other major issues are something I never encounter.

Please send pix of your home screen.

Hi,

I just got w10 before the virus and the attached pix is how it looks/feels/runs. I'm an ret busn mgr with no tech training other than hands on-doing, reading & making mistakes & getting up again.
Pix included is not the latest, but I'm sure you will get the concept.

I keep hearing about this "shell" function. Can someone give me an Exec summary as it looks like you can do some nice stuff with it.

Regards,

klxdrt
