IE 8 & 9/ Windows 7 - It takes too long to Bookmark a link !!!!

I am running IE 8 , latest as of 10 Sept 11, Windows 7 Ultimate on an Intel Quad Core (9300), 8 GB RAM, 1.5 TB Drive. When I hit "Add to Favorite" on IE to book mark a link, it takes 20-40 seconds until I am prompted to save the link some 30-40 seconds later. Needless to say, this is very annoying. I tried the following troubleshooting to isolate the problem:

1- Installed IE 9 - Same Issue
2. I removed all my existing favorite links/folders from the "Favorites folder" under C/ Users) - thninking that the number of existing links/folders may be the cause - Same Issue
3. I uninstalled IE 9 and defaulted to IE 8 - Same Issue
4. I uninstalled IE 8 - i.e. no IE browser left in my OS since IE 7 can not run on Win 7- then reinstalled IE 9 - Same Issue
5. I tried firefox, it works like a charm.

I restored to earlier versions of windows backups but it did not help. I suspect that this issue has been there for a while - may be some file or registry entry is corrupted. Any help will be appreciated - including clean removal of IE 9 and clean install or..any sound advice- thanks

You could try the keyboard shortcut Ctrl D to save the bookmark its a long shot but will only take a second.
Try Tools >Internet Options>Advanced>reset Internet Explorer Options.

Have you tried disabling or uninstalling all add-ons/ plugins for the browser, closing and restarting it then trying to bookmark? May be some add-on interfering.

IE safe mode - start menu search/about:no add-ons.

Deleted browser history/cache/cookies, etc?

And/ or tried resetting IE?

Hi Airbot,

Thank you for the tip. I disabled all add-ons, did an IE reset - without add-ons and less that 5 links saved in my Favorites folder, it still takes 12-15 second to save. Is this normal? How long does it take to bookmark?

Not sure why.
Doesn't sound normal to me.
Bookmarking in IE for me is pretty much instantaneous.

Perhaps an AntiVirus/firewall/network shield program/s you have installed and monitoring interfering?

Airbot,
Thank you for the reply, I will try to investigate the firewall/antivrus settings per your suggestion. One more thing, I checked theProperties of the Favorites file under C:|Users and I have 1.43 GB for a size. I do not have much stored in favorites other than the default links and a couple more. Can you or anyone tell me if this is normal?

I only have a size of 467 KB with 2,745 files/26 folders. Not huge, but quite a bit of bookmarks in there.
Not sure why yours would be so large a size if you say it's with only default links and a "couple more".

Airbot,

Thank you again. I am going to focus on how to delete the Favorite file, which is locked, I think it is part of IE- I may have to uninstall IE9, find a way to delete the locked Favorite file and reinstall IE 9.

Still having the same issue. I have deleted all the files I could within the Favorites folder and have left in it the default stuff that is included with Windows. The favorite folder now contains: AppData 1.34 GB (3 sub folders: local, locallow and Roaming), Downloads (19.2 GB), Desktop (12.2 GB) and My Pictures (8.9 GB). I do not care of having any of these folders under my Favorites folder. Can I get rid of them?

Whatever you do do not delete your AppData
Its safe to delete or move somewhere else whatever is in Desktop ,Downloads & My Pictures but probably best to leave the folders alone I don't think you would be allowed to delete your desktop anyway.

The Favorites folder that is at the top in Windows Explorer is not where your bookmarks are .
They are in c:\users\"your user name"\Favorites it has a golden star on the correct folder.

Paste %USERPROFILE%\Favorites into the Start search box & you'll see it.

You'd better check out the links folder as well
The favorites folder for windows explorer sidebar in windows7 is located in:
%USERPROFILE%\Links

Hi Stve

Thank you for the post. I uninstalled IE 9 and IE 8 and decided to use Firefox for now - it works great. I will search for instructions on CLEAN Install of IE. I may give IE a try then.
