IE stops working immediately after opening

Whenever I open Internet Explorer 64 bit, a message immediately pops up saying something to the effect of "Internet explorer has stopped working. Windows is looking for a solution .. blah blah blah" Whether I wait for it to tell me to close IE or immediately try to close the message, it just pops up over and over again, making the only way to actually quit IE to go into task manager and end the process (I'm not sure if this is relevant, but when I do that, there are two "iexplore" processes, and only ending the second one (when they're in alphabetical order) actually turns off IE). The program launched from the menu item "Internet Explorer", which I assume is 32 bit IE, works just fine, as does the no add-ons mode. I have also seen several people asking questions about IE 9 64 bit stopping working on youtube and related sites because of issues with 64 bit flash or the lack thereof. This IS NOT that problem - it freezes immediately upon the start of the program. Also, I have just upgraded to Service Pack 1, but the problem existed before that (I was actually hoping SP1 might fix it, but no luck). I have also uninstalled updates to IE and then re updated to 9, but that didn't help either. (also it is really annoying that that's the closest you're allowed to get to uninstalling IE completely. I would feel much better if I could just exorcise the whole thing and start fresh, but no dice). Anyway, thanks for taking a look!

Unrelated problem: I cannot get the below text about languages to go away. I didn't put it in myself, it appeared when I clicked "preview post". I've deleted it from the text box several times now, but it always reappears when I click preview post.

Look through it to see what might apply to your situation.

Re IE9.

* Do you receive any error message when it freezes?


*Check if any add-ons on the Internet explorer are causing the error. I would suggest you to try opening IE9 in the no add-ons mode.

a) Click the Start button, click All Programs and click Accessories

b) Click System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Try to run IE without any addons:

Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools

and see if the browser crashes again. If not, it is definitely due to some of the extensions/accelerators you may have installed.

Devux: I haven't done that recently, but I'm pretty sure I did when the problem first came up and it didn't help. In any case, this is the first attempt I've made to use IE with any regularity because I have a laptop with a relatively short screen, and that about an inch and a half of toolbars that 8 has really cuts into the screen space more than I'd like. So if I was dead set on using IE, yeah, I'd just downgrade, but that's not really what I'm after.
Neutron16: Probably should have mentioned that in the original post: yeah I did run the Fixit, and it didn't.
JMH: One of the reasons I came to this forum is because Microsoft's generic help pages were infuriatingly unhelpful, but here goes:

  1. yes: it says “Internet explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available” When I click Close Program, the same message comes up again and it does this in a loop until I get tired of it and end the program from the task manager. It doesn't give anything specific about the error though.
  2. As mentioned in my original post, what I think is the 32 bit version and the no addons mode work fine. Why don't I just use the 32 bit one, you ask? Well, I would, and when I have to use IE for something, I do. However, at least one of my gadgets (I think it may be the rss one), while it is content to open articles I click on with my default browser, still checks for updates or something in IE. And, I guess since I'm using 64 bit windows, it feels the need to do so using the 64 bit IE, leading to the aforementioned error message loop popping up whenever it tries do do so. I've hunted around in the individual gadgets settings, and can find no option to change what browser it uses for updates.
  3. As mentioned above, I ran the fixit and it didn't help.
  4. Resetting did not solve the problem
  5. It crashes immediately upon opening – it doesn't even have time to put an address into the bar, much less load a page, so I haven't been able to try compatibility mode.
  6. Don't want to use ie8 as mentioned above, an already use Firefox 4 as my default. Due to Mozilla being only 32 bit and having some memory issues in 64 bit windows, I was considering IE9 as my alternate browser, which led to this problem.
And, last but not least, Gornot: I'm not seeing an “Accessories” under all programs, but maybe I'm doing it wrong. In any case, I've run the program listed as “Internet Explorer (No add-ons)” and it works fine. The problem is reserved to the 64 bit version. Although, given that what I'm pretty sure is 32 bit ie works and 64 doesn't, I do wonder if that no addons is for the 32 bit version. If so, does anyone know if there's a way to specifically run the 64 bit version in no addons mode?

ok, I don't know if anyone is still paying attention to this thread, but windows security center just popped up a warning saying that something called imesh had been causing the problems. Thing is I didn't have any idea what imesh even was until that mentioned it. it isnt listed in my programs, and I can't find any of the files listed in ehows instructions for removing it either. I have antivirus and anti malware, and the only place i download programs from is an official, trustworthy site or cnet, so I haven't got any idea how it got on my computer (or if it really is not my computer, for that matter).

If you are comfortable with using regedit, what I did was search for every instance of imesh in the registry and deleted it. I then rebooted my PC and prayed. That did the trick and I am happily running iMesh free now."
