IE & Word 2010 aspx no longer opens properly. prompted to open or save

Suddenly I have a computer that won't handle and aspx operation properly. A website has a button you click to generate a report, in word doc form. But now instead of opening as a word doc, you're prompted to open or save a .aspx file. The aspx file opens in notepad, but that's part of the problem, because it should be creating and opening a *.docx file not an *docx.aspx file.

This works fine on other computers, and worked fine on this computer until a few days ago.

I have tried:
Mucking around with different security settings in IE,
Looked at file extensions, tried setting them to open aspx with word or with IE,
Tried the aspx file association reg fix on this site.
Tried repairing office
Tried sfc /scannow (found no integrity violations)

Nothing has worked.

I seem to recall figuring this out before, but I can't remember what I did.

Sounds like a problem with the website, not your computer since the problem you are having has to do with saving a file from the website.

Maybe there is a setting on the website that determines the format of the file to be saved?

This is something that happens to some computers sometimes and there's a fix for it but I can't remember what it is lol. Multiple computers access this same site and it works fine. But sometimes windows or IE won't correctly load these links and tries to download them as aspx instead of whatever they are supposed to be. It could be a server side problem but I would be surprised since like I said, probably 30 other computers do this correctly.

Tried clearing temp internet files? Run CCleaner. Also try DNS flushing (restart) if you haven't already.

Turned out their was a degrading internet connection! It finally went completely down and there was no internet at all. ISP restored the connection and everything started working like it should. Go figure!
