am back again, thought id cracked it. ive tried a few different strips [found them here] now and can only get 3 gb to show. is there a way to tell what i can mix with what ive already got, so i dont waste it

each strip works ok on its own.

above it was said that crucial always works with dell, does that mean its a better bet with the mix i have
thanx

I have no personal info on whether it will accept/use more than 4GB. Just reporting the Dell published specs, what I go by.

Dell, in many cases, uses a modified motherboard chipset and the AMD or Intel published specs do not always apply. For example, I had a Dimension E510 (5150 model is identical). It came with a D820 CPU and according to the Intel specs it was compatible with up to a D960 CPU. But, because of the Dell custom chipset implementation a D945 was the fastest Dxxx CPU that would work in it. We had reports, on the Dell forum, of users trying the D960 and it would not boot.

do you or does anyone know if other crucial ram [ddr2] will work besides the ones recommended

as i will buy some
thanks

I suggest to buy DDR2 800 (PC6400). Even if the MB only work with lower clocks, the DDR2 800 will also work with a lower clock and with better timings (CAS etc).

Did you buy DDR2 800 (PC 6400)?

dont know, i thought those were 2 separate speeds 800 and 6400, but from what u say they appear top be different things.

yes i think there are different things, anyway its probably the 800i bid on but the important thing i need to know is will other crucial ram [ddr2] work besides [as well as] the ones they recommend?

if not i will cancel my auction bid

the OS is 64 bit

dont know, i thought those were 2 separate speeds 800 and 6400, but from what u say they appear top be different things.

800 is the data transfer rate (T = transfers) - 800 MT/s
6400 is the data transfer rate in Bytes - 6400 MB/s

DDR2 uses a 64 bit wide bus, 1 byte = 8 bits, so 1 transfer = 8 bytes of data

800 * 8 = 6400

hence 'I suggest to buy DDR2 800 (PC6400)'
