Not done this before so would like to pick your brains. I would like to connect two desktop pc's both in different rooms to each other. I would like to be able to access each pc , drives, printer and the Internet from both depending on which one I am using at the time.
My main PC is using a Buffalo WHR - G300N V2 Wireless router to connect to the Internet via an Fiber Optic BT Modem. I don't want to connect them via WI-FI as that is not a practical solution for me. The other midi tower is in the box awaiting unpacking and has no network card or the like in it just the standard motherboard out to connect to a router.
So can I just use the equipment I already have to join the two up? If yes I guess I'll be needing some cat6 cable ? Plus how do I go about connecting them ??
Or is there a simple tutorial on here that I can follow ?

Using wireless would be easiest, the only other option is using very long Ethernet cables?
Using wireless I got rid of two 50' cables we were walking over.

Yessir, I read wireless is not a practical option. Can you say why? 20' and a wall should be no problem whereas drilling holes or hanging cable would be. I'm just confused I think.

Do you want to actually access each desktop from the other pc ? If both are Windows 7 Pro or higher you can use a Windows feature called remote desktop connection. You just have to connect each pc to the router/modem with cat5e/cat6 cables. If your modem doesn't have enough sockets, get a cheap gigabit switch. I have several pcs scattered around my flat for my render jobs and use remote desktop to access them. The ones in my lounge just use cable, while the distant ones use powerline adapters (ethernet over mains wiring).
