Installed drivers for a new GeForce GTX 765M, Windows not loading past

the Starting Windows screen.

So after a freak accident involving compressed air, my original graphics card on my laptop, a Medion Erazer X7817, went kaput. So I ordered a new 765M from eBay and I got it yesterday after many days of waiting. I knew how to operate on my laptop, so I took off the bottom cover, took out the dead GPU, set the new one in with thermal pads + paste, and started the laptop. When I first pressed the power button, the laptop turned on for two seconds but then shut off. I pressed it again, and it booted up successfully. However, when Windows loads it's a 640x480, 4-bit mess of a screen, but it's navigable at the least.

So I downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers, had to edit some .ini files so the system check would catch the "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" that was just installed. After that, I restarted the computer, and now it won't go past the Starting Windows screen though I do hear the startup tune and can even login, blindly.

Any suggestions?

Hi Welcome to Seven Forums ....Does your Laptop have duel Graphics ? ...

See if you can boot into safe Mode and Uninstall the Driver ..

Then Download the Driver from the Manufactures Website ...

If by dual graphics you mean two identical graphics cards, then no. But if you mean having a dedicated graphics card (the GeForce GTX 765M) as well as the onboard processor graphics (Intel HD Graphics 4000), then yes.

The Intel HD Graphics in Device Manager is giving me Code 12, which means it doesn't have enough free resources. I've tried installing the latest drivers there, but it hasn't worked. I've also disabled the new dedicated GPU but that didn't seem to work either.

See if you can boot into safe Mode and Uninstall the Driver ..

Then Download the Driver from the Manufactures Website ...

Medion provides all of the factory drivers on an E: drive in their laptops labelled Recovery, so thankfully I had those handy. Nonetheless I downloaded the Nvidia driver from one of their laptops which had a 765M sold with it. I had to go and edit the .ini file again so I could add the Device ID.

So using Device Manager I manually installed the drivers via the .ini file. Now whenever I boot up Windows normally, I'll see the logo for about 5-7 seconds, then get a BSOD, the culprit being nvlddmkm.sys (I'll get the rest later, trying to have the boot logged). So I'm forced to enter Safe Mode to get past the login screen.


I think what I need to do is try to fix the Intel HD Graphics, and then try and sort out the graphics card. The reason my laptop always boots into 640x480 16-bit is because of the HD Graphics giving Code 12, so if I find a way to fix it I'll hopefully get something more navigable.

Any pointers otherwise?

I do agree with you need the Intel fixed first ... Do not think that Installing the Chipset Driver would help ...

Maybe your best bet would be to remove the new Graphics Card and start from there ..

As that seems to be causing a conflict .. As well as your BSOD ...

Yeah, only problem is that before I even installed the new graphics card everything was working fine for the Intel HD Graphics. If I were to fix the problem by removing the card it would probably come back when I put it back in again - killing the whole point of trying to get a new graphics card working with my laptop.

I'll see what else I can do first.

Having duel Graphics the Intel Card would be used at boot .. The Gtx Card would only be used when needed ..

So if you can not boot into Normal Mode when you have the Intel Card sorted and no Driver Installed for the other Card ..

That would seem to mean that there might be a fault with your new Card ....

Okay, I've just had a major breakthrough:

I've found the solution to my resolution being 640x480 and 16-bit colour - I disabled this in device manager:

Xeon(R) processor e-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor PCI Express Root Port - 0151

When I disabled this and then restarted, my colors were back to normal and I could finally get to 1920x1080. Finally.

The bad news, however, is that if I disable this, the graphics card disappears from Device Manager.

They share the same I/O Ports 0x0000E000-0x0000E07F
and the same Memory Addresses 0xE0000000-0xEFFFFFFF and 0xF5000000-0xF5FFFFF

The only time the card doesn't share with the Xeon is IRQ 11.

Now I don't entirely know what all the Resource stuff means, but is there anything else I can try and do? The Intel HD Graphics still reports Code 12 even after disabling the Xeon, but at least I get the display options back.

This is a Chipset related problem .... Read the Link below it is not the same System as yours ...

Your Chipset is the Mobile Intel® HM67 Express Chipset ..

It is part of the mobile Intel® 6 Series Chipset family....
