How do i make them stop doing that? Im running in japanese locale for non-unicode support and some programs, especially installers think that im using japanese text when everything on my screen is in english, and they just automatically start up in the japanese language....

Would really like a solution that doesnt involve repeatedly switching system locales.

Hello Question2, and welcome to seven forums.

Bumping causes your thread to be missed, as it looks like your being helped which is why you have not had a response yet. Don't do it.

Now to your problem, where did your windows version come from? Was it preinstalled on the pc? What is your language settings set to? Can you take a screenshot of your region and language settings found in control panel?

Your awesome for reading this.
Oh ok.

I installed it. Language is set to english but non-unicode language is set to japanese. That causes installers to flake out and think im running in japanese language for all programs and not just non-unicode though.

I think its just badly programmed installers...

MUI - Multi-lingual User Interface.

Unless a program is deliberately created as multi-lingual, it will only install in the original language in which it is written - no matter what the host OS language is.

It's possible with Ultimate to actually run the OS in any of about 40 different languages - but the installed programs will still only run in their own native language unless they have alternate translations available by one means or another.
In Windows itself, the alternate languages are provided through MUI Language Packs available through Windows Update optional updates,
In non-MS programs alternate languages are sometimes also through the use of MUI files (which are adjuncts to dll files, supplying the interface's user-facing dialog), but are often through swapping either dll files, or the use of .ini files and alternate datafiles with the appropriate languages - or even completely different installers.

It may be that you are actually installing the japanese version of such programs, selected at time of download by your location as seen by the website from which you are downloading - rather than and English version which may or may not be available.

In addition to what you have already been told, please check the location of your PC from Control Panel > Region & Language > Location tab. This must not be your case and might even be quite far fetched, but as a quite experienced user of multilingual Windows (each PC user accounts in 4 different display languages) I know how important it is.

2014-04-06_22h04_15.png

An example: My English user accounts have the Current Location set to United Kingdom. When I now open my IE home page MSN, it will be shown in English (http://uk.msn.com). If I now close IE, change the Current Location to Finland and relaunch IE, it shows the Finnish MSN (http://fi.msn.com).

The same happens with some (not all) downloads, using the UK location I will be given an English installer, whereas using location Finland I will get a Finnish installer. That's exactly why I set the Current Location on each individual user account in my Windows computers according to the language the said user account has as display language.

Yea my location is set to US and i am downloaidng the english or generic version of a installer.

But as long as i have non-unicode language set to Japanese, some programs go full retard and run in the japanese language...is there really no way to fix it other than changing non-unicode back to english, which requires a restart?

Not if the program doesn't have the option to force an English option, no - because it thinks that because you have non-Unicode set to Japanese, that you want everything in Japanese. Check with the program's writers as to options.

Thats weird, the non-unicode option says that it only kicks in for non-unicode programs?
