Installing video driver for Intel 855 Centrino Chipset

SOL

After talking with Intel, they are not going to produce a driver. They have declared the 8xx series unsupported for 7.

 Looks like that is it folks

Anyone know how to hack together something that works? I'm out of ideas. :(

THANKS SO MUCH!!! The files from Post #8 got my Gateway 855-based laptop working great. I dunno about OpenGL, but for 2-D stuff it's fine. I now get the natvive 1280x800 res for my screen, and that's really what matters.

I went from a 1.0 to a WE 1.9 score with the change in drivers from stock VGA to this. Still a 1.0 for 3D, but that's fine. This is a Celeron-M 1.5 Ghz and it never did 3D.

Amazingly enough, it's working!!! Using the old Win2000 drivers from 2003 provided in the previous post. I did have to do some interesting things, like a few safe mode boots, attaching an external screen, etc to get it to stick.

But I'm 1 week of using 7100 on my Dell 700m and it's amazing!!!

Still can't get it working on my 700m

I tried this again with build 7100 and the drivers install but then they come up with an error on reboot even after disabling integrity checks. :(

I know this is weird, but it's worked twice for my 700m. Attach a monitor to the VGA port and get the drivers to install again and reboot (don't tell Windows to extend to the monitor, just have it connected). That should get you the correct screen resolution.

Either there is something weird about having that connection, or I have a wacky laptop :)

I tried this and still had no joy. The drivers install fine but on reboot they show up with a yellow warning triangle in the device manager and the screen still renders as with the standard VGA driver. Am I missing something? Am I supposed to install the drivers in safe mode or something?

Solution

As this thread comes up first when you google for this problem I thought I would register and provide the solution to the problem here...

First of all you need some drivers. I used the Vista ones from here: http://justendeal.com/driver/855gm_vista_driver.zip

Second you need to install these drivers. Now this is where the first problem comes in....

It seems W7 wont let you install any new drivers when the generic VGA is already loaded. The actual error will say something about a driver is already loaded into memory. So it asks you to reboot first. Now here is the problem. When it reboots it loads the generic VGA driver first, then installs the new driver again. However, it can't load that driver cause there is already a driver loaded into memory... lol..

So to overcome this you need to go into Device Manager and right click on the Generic VGA driver and update the driver to your newly downloaded 855 drivers.... Don't reboot yet....

Ok, here is where you may run into your second problem. The new driver wont install because your screen size is below 600px in height. Duh... VGA...

So to fix that problem you need to right click on the desktop and choose Screen resolution. Now the resolution is probably grayed out so you can't change it. You will need to click Advanced settings and then click List all modes.

In there you should pick the 1024*768 @ 256 colors. This will look terrible but will give you a big enough resolution to install the driver. Click OK and reboot...

When the system comes back up you should now be running, and have full access to your 855gm drivers....

I hope that helps somebody...

OK. I finally have this working on my dell 700m after using a mix of this solution and another that I tried with the beta build and got BSOD. Turn off integrity checks as described in step 2 above then download the drivers. Reboot in safe mode and install the drivers as decribed above. Click the "Scan for hardware changes" button at the top of the device manager and let it whirr away until it gives you a dialogue box saying the 855 drivers are ready to use. Reboot.

When you reboot the screen will display as before in VGA mode, but when you log in the new drivers will be detected and installed. The screen will go black. Reboot when the hard disk has become idle. You should now be running with the intel drivers. If you right click on the desktop and click screen relolution, then click advanced settings and then list all modes, you should be able to change to 1280x800 32bit true colour mode.

Hope this helps somebody.

Have either of you two gotten the Vista drivers to work or only the crusty 2003 ones?

No. All the other drivers I've tried give me BSOD hell before the system even boots. These drivers are the only ones I've ever got to stick.

Half working solution..

Hello to all and sorry for my terrible english :s
I have managed to install the driver on my ibm x40 with full res and 3d acceleration in win 7 rc

*I dont know if it has a connection but i first installed the "test update" before doing this.

first open cmd and type "bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS " then go to step 1
1) download the newer and the zipped xp driver from intel site, than unzip them(dont install yet)
2) download the exported vista drivers

3)Lets start:
first and very important!!! is to put the vista driver location in the preconfigure driver folder to do it---enter to the device manager and press to update the driver then press the browse button and press search even that the win will tell you that you have newer one (dont skip this step). then update the driver agin but press in the "let me pick a list of device driver" button and install the vista one then restart as required but choose safe mode in the same restart.

5) repeat step 3 until you get the part of "let me pick a list of device driver" choose the xp drivers then right after they got installed just restart in normal mode and wait 2 minutes (dont panic if the vista drivers is being installed they will work without restart) and enjoy full res and full acceleration.
*you will notice that the device manager have two drivers one working and the second one with triangle from some reason it is the external monitor device..
(in this step is very important to not install the xp driver by browsing the computer and searching only by pressing "have disk" like in step 3)

* the vista drivers will install agin after the restart (after the safemode) so dont panic they will work without restart agin ---> you can check in dxdiag.. so dont restart because if you do so you will need to repeat steps 4-5(the bsod
sad.gif
)
also, some times the two devices work without the yellow triangle but sometimes as I wrote one device, the device of the external monitor
is yellow(code 43) I just couldent figure out why sometimes they both work and sometime just one but allways the "important" work
and you can use your laptop normaly.

The googd news: all app will work as they worked in xp or vista
no system freezes at all, even playing movie and all will work perfect but there is bad news also..

the bad: sometimes one of the devices is showen with yellow triangle luckly allways it is the external display so you wont be able to connect your laptop to other display (at least for me) but you can use him normally.

The worst news you will have to repet steps 4-5 each time you turn on the pc but can be usefull to play an old game or an app that require 3d acceleration

In those pictures the both drivers worked after restart so I could chose my monitor but as I said some times I have only one monitor if
one driver has the yellow triangle..

Thanks, BigJimmy! I tried your "win2000 driver" method with my test harddisk on my 700m, it worked for me!!!!! So great! Finally, I am going to install windows 7 on it!

Yes, it black out the screen after login. And, I wait for about 5 minutes then power down then power up my 700m. The screen is native 1280x800@16bit right away.

I didn't try nitsan57's "combo xp and vista driver" method yet.

Thank you so much for everyone here!

I used driver downloaded from post #52
driver loader and give usual problems and bod upon reboot.

Solution:geek:
Run dxdiag - showed video memory to be about 57 mb max
mod ialmn5.inf under [i852gm.generalconfigdata],
maximumdevicememoryconfiguration = 64

alot of sytems using the 852/855 chipsets only have 64mb videomemory like mine.
My tablet works fine using Windows 7 now:D

correction

Correction to previous post.

The solution only works with an external lcd attached. without the external attached reboot will give BSOD.

So it seems Os is looking for monitor attached to secondary adapter first and not finding it, it give a BSOD with error code 0x7e

re attaching external lcd and rebooting -givie no error and tablet works fine even if the external lcd is detached until next boot.

Possible fix may be in the driver or maybe a reg fix.

A little update

in adition to my post i have found that with my solution
sleep option dont work, also i discoverd that you can just after you do
all the steps at least once, evry time before the shut down you can just install the xp driver by updating the driver in the device manager instead of entering the safe mode evry time you turn on the computer (to install the drivers and reboot agin..)
