Well daniel I thought that was to easy but had to ask. I read the thread and didn't find you post about overheating could you give me a brief overview? I also have a dell and mine runs hot as well.

Sorry, my mistake. The comment was on another forum somewhere and I can't seem to find it. It was not particularly revelationary as I recall. One user reported the random power downs and another responded that it was likely overheating.

This got me thinking about the new power management features in Windows 7. I understand that Windows 7 does some stuff behind the scenes to optimise power usage, much more than previous Windows versions and I thought that perhaps this is somehow incompatible with the older Dell laptops.

It might be worth looking into disabling the new power features and seeing if the systems run cooler.

It's definitely overheat! When my 700m with windows 7 7127 power off, I was usually copying several Gigs of files from one place to the other place & watching rmvb or divx & using firefox... The vent on left hand side was extremely hot. What surprise me is that it never happened in XP...

A search of Google for "windows 7 overheat" reveals a number of similar reports, overheating in Win7 but not in XP.

No obvious solutions found...yet.

I have an insiron 1405 (old as the hills) and it ran hot enough to even cause some instability. it wasn't just on win 7, but on vista as well. Besides the obvious things I did download core temp to monitor the temp, and 18kfanto see if I could get it to run cooler (which it does). what power plan are you using i win 7? high perf, balanced or battery?

I've tried both balanced and high performance with the same issue. I guess it could come down to the graphics card overheating due to hacked driver install. I wonder if anyone is having similar issues using the standard (default) video driver (the one that don't go above 1024x768).

So, both 3722 and 4656 driver worked for my 700m now, thanks to Arathranar with his solution to the 0x7E BSOD... Great!

I think I may be back on track. I installed "Notebook Hardware Control" (at Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) - Homepage, Downloads, Help, Docu, FAQ, News - www.pbus-167.com) and decreased the CPU voltage so that my system runs about 10 degrees cooler (in celsius). So far today I have not had a crash and also just completed a burn-in test using Sandra.

Fingers crossed that this is a work around.

Please post here if anyone has success with this method.

I had this problem too, after installing the driver in W7 (never had the problem in XP). I installed i8kfan and set the fan to run always, which seemed to help, but I'm going to try this now to see if I can set the fan back to automatic.

hi frnds i tried this way but i cant get it .after trying so much i got 100% result.thatis after installing installing w7 u get stander vga drivers then u directly install only[only] this driver [by going through computer managment>displaydrivers>properties>update driver>locate this drivers on hard drive after unziping .]and reboot after installation is completed.

vvimp MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

2.drag cmd prompt on to the desktop . start run as adminitrator >type Bcdedit.exe /set nointegritychecks ON
3.u can check in dxdiag>display for conformation
OK. I finally have this working on my dell 700m after using a mix of this solution and another that I tried with the beta build and got BSOD. Turn off integrity checks as described in step 2 above then download the drivers. Reboot in safe mode and install the drivers as decribed above. Click the "Scan for hardware changes" button at the top of the device manager and let it whirr away until it gives you a dialogue box saying the 855 drivers are ready to use. Reboot.

When you reboot the screen will display as before in VGA mode, but when you log in the new drivers will be detected and installed. The screen will go black. Reboot when the hard disk has become idle. You should now be running with the intel drivers. If you right click on the desktop and click screen relolution, then click advanced settings and then list all modes, you should be able to change to 1280x800 32bit true colour mode.

Hope this helps somebody.

This worked like a charm for me with build 7100 on my Dell 700m!! Thanks gopinndn and BigJimmy :D

Thanks everyone for lots of useful information. I have eventually got my Sony Vaio VGN-T2XP working with windows 7. I had trouble using the basic procedure outlined by Frustrated (post 42) above. However, adding two ingredients into the mix worked for me:

1) Follow Arathranar's (post 74) to disable the start up screen which forces a certain resolution and default graphics drivers ("running msconfig and checking Boot->OS boot information. Instead of the animation you now get text showing driver loads and the 0x7E STOP blue screen")

2) For some reason the "bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS" command seems a bit unreliable. Another way of disabling these checks is "Use gpedit.msc and navigate to: User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Driver Installation and enable the "Code signing for drivers" and then choose "Ignore"." For more details see here.

Very pleased, this will give another lease of life to my laptop.

Install 855GM Series Video Driver on Windows 7 - Tutorial

I've gotten my Dell 700m running Windows 7 Ultimate RTM going at 1280 x 800, 32-bit. I couldn't use the DriverMax solution, the notebook was running factory XP

A note that when you install the new driver in step #5, the screen blanked out for me. Had to wait a bit for the hard drive to stop spinning and performed a hard reboot. Didn't bother restoring security on the vgapnp.sys file after step #5

Flaming Homer,

I am the author of that tutorial. I tried to post it here for all to use but it said that administrator has to evalutate it. I guess someone deleted it!!!!

Anyway,

It is nice that the tutorial worked for you :) . It took me a while to figure this mess out.

I would advise you to do STEP 6 to bring the vgapnp.sys to usuable state.

Thank you very much, I will continue with the rest of the steps - I actually copied vgapnp.sys to vgapnp.sys_ after disabling file security, so I'll just copy it back. None of the other solutions listed here worked for me.

Lexxion Technique worked on Sony Vaio PCG-TR3AP

Lexxion,

Thank you for your walkthrough on getting the Intel 855 driver going on Windows 7.

Your procedure worked perfectly on my Sony VAIO PCG-TR3AP (with Intel 855GM Video)

I am now writing this using a beautiful 1280x768 resolution under Windows 7.

This machine has never been faster, Window 7 definitely seems to be more efficient than Windows XP.

thanks,

Larry

Lexxion,

I followed the walkthrough on getting the Intel 855 driver going on Windows 7 but i don´t understand this:

cacls c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys /G peter:F

my pc name is Vaio and i put this:

cacls c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys /G Vaio:F

and it says: Invalid Parameter "Vaio:F"

what i do wrong?

i have a Sony VAIO VGN-T2XP/S (with Intel 855GME Video)

i want to put 1280x768 resolution under Windows 7.
