Installing Windows 7 HP on a new hard disc from recovery discs

The hard disk of my Gateway NV78 notebook pre-installed with Windows 7 HP has crashed. I have made the recovery discs in 3 DVDs . I will be buying a new hard disk. I would like to know whether it is possible to install Windows 7 HP on the new hard disc from the recovery discs or I have to go in for a new installation disc.

Hopefully wouldnt be a problem. The only 2 issues that i have come across in people trying to use the recovery disks on a replacement drive are:

1) In HP (hewlett packard) computers, sometimes this process doesnt work on aftermarket hdds unless they have been purchased from HP. The reason ascribed is that the hdd needs to be "tattoed" by HP.

2) Acer notebooks may have an issue if the new hdd is unformatted. So make sure you format and
create 2 partitions before trying to install from those disks. The second partition seems to be needed for expanding recovery files.

Should all fail, you can still do a clean install of home premium using a disk borrowed from a friend or downloaded off the web. You can activate it using the COA key on the sticker on your computer, or if that doesnt work by calling MS. Should it come to that, post back and somebody will help you out with the tuts and procedures.

My original hard disc size was 500GB with a single partition. If at least 2 partitions are to be provided, what can be the size of second partition, if I go for a new 500GB hard disc..

Can you suggest a download site for downloading Windows 7 Home Premium. I have the OEM product key on the label affixed to the laptop.

1) Size of partitions would depend on whether you use large programs or run games from the windows partition. If you dont around 50-60 gb should be sufficient. If you're keep 100 gb for the windows partition and 400 gb for the next. In any case partitions can be resized after the install so dont worry.

2) Unfortunately i cannot suggest a site for downloading home premium since that would be seen as encouraging piracy. However, google is your friend. Do avoid "pre-activated" ones, they are no good. As long as you have a legit key, theres no issue.

As Bill has said, you can use any disk to create an "all versions" installer though they are bit-rate specific, you can only create a 32-bit all versions installer from a 32-bit Windows 7 but you are able to install either bit-rate using your key as long as it's the same version.

There are Two options available.



1. You can order a replacement set of Recovery Discs using the link below - these will reinstall the operating system, all required drivers and nearly all of the original software ( the exception often being trials of MS Office ). They will also re-create all the original partitions, including the Recovery Partition.

2. Another option you could consider is to create your own Windows 7 installation disc.



Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).

You can create a Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the same version that originally came with your PC ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here. These Images are clean and from a well-respected source ( Digital River ).
