Integrated versus Independent File Converters

Recently I noticed two free popular media players separated the file converting capabilities from their players and now offer a free player and a free converter.

Certainly there can be a number of commercial reasons for doing so. However...

Is there any technical reason why offering a converter and a player is better than offering the converting capabilities integrated into the player.

Remember, "Because that's what people want" is a commercial (more specifically, a marketing) justification and not a technical justification.​

The Stereo Mix option ( AKA Record what you hear), was removed from a lot of sound cards & sound chips after lobbying by the content providers as it allows you to digitally record any source you can play through the speakers, so can circumvent copyright protection systems.

You may want to look at one of the many available Plug-in USB sound cards or a traditional PCI card some of these still have the Stereo mix option

it would also allow you to have two sound outputs to provide Live and Monitor streams for DJ'ing
