Internet missing after system reboot: all attempted fixes failed

Hello

I am hoping someone can help me with a little internet problem on a Windows 7 professional system.

Essentially, last week after an Update, I could not get back onto my driver (the hard drive is partitioned so I have a section and my other half has another). A system restore to the previous day has allowed me to access the computer again, but the internet is gone.

The OH can use the internet on the same computer (I am on his half now), so there is no fault with the modem, the cable or the internet connection per se. We have tried to restore the internet using various manual methods, but can get no further than the SetUp. At this point we get a message Error 711, and reports that the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager is not responding.

I have tried to fix this today, but cannot get onto the services to fix it - when I click on Services and go to 'run as admin', the message appears "Class not Registered". I have also had this message when trying to connect the internet by writing a manual IP address, and when looking for the IP drivers.

The OH is threatening F*kdisk which would mean I lose everything on the drive, but I do not have another solution.

Hopefully someone out there can assist me.

I'm not sure how to proceed from here but here's something you can look into for the 711 error code - You receive an "Error 711: Cannot load Remote Access Service Connection Manager" error message when you create a network connection. I just ran through the procedures on my Win 7 system and the steps are correct.

Ad for F-disking the machine, I say give this a try first - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R. This won't wipe you info, however as a precaution you should always back up/have a backup of you data in cae something goes wrong.

Hello Sygnus and Seavixen.

I have just been in and tried the Windows 7 procedures, and I cannot get any further than Manage - then the good old "Class not registered" appears. It seems similar to the process I was trying to complete by going straight to 'services'.

I will speak to OH about the restore: that seems like a better solution if he can find his installation disks.

Hi again,

I have now spoken to the OH, and he says that he has tried the Repair Install process. The computer went through it all and then said "Nothing to repair" at the end of it.

Is there another way to go at it without having to reinstall the whole system?

When you find the disks try the repair install I linked to in my first post. Make sure you read the caution about SP1. And as always.... backup backup backup (your data)

Hello again.

We have now tried the repair install: the computer will not allow us to re-install Windows 7 - it says "Cannot install Windows 7 Professional over Windows 7 Professional". The other option is Custom which will delete files and programs.

We also tried a basic system reinstall, which again did nothing, although the system restore is now dated 18/10/2011, with all the previous restore points being missing.

Not one of our more successful weeks in computer terms, I fear.

If you have any more suggestions I would be happy to give that a shot - I just want my internet back.

Hi again!

Internet is back up and working - I did some looking around on here and found instructions on how to repair files using the sfc command prompt. So I typed in sfc/scannow, let it do its work, and then rebooted.

Lo, all of a sudden my internet is back.

Thank you very much to Sygnus and Seavixen for your help, and also thank you sevenforums.com, I'd have lost months of work without you.

Now I must go and backup.
