i have an old dell laptop with windows xp. It has a USB wireless adapter, and an ethernet pc card.

then i have an emachine desktop with windows 7, and an ethernet port, but no wireless.

this seems easy to do with 2 windows 7 computer but i can't figure it out in xp. i want to share the internet connection i get from xp to window 7 via ethernet.

but that's not the only problem, i don't know how to install these drivers for my ethernet pc card on windows xp:

D-Link 10/100 Fast Ethernet Notebook Adapter

i downloaded them and unzipped them where it defaulted to, restarted, and got nothing, i got the pc card at a garage sale.. it was cheap.. (meaning i don't have the disc).. windows xp recognizes it, but, i don't really know what to do after that..

i really have no experience with windows xp, all my computer usage was with windows vista, seven, and various linux distros, i hardly ever used xp..

unrelated: i'm doing this so i can run a private minecraft hamachi server wirelessly. the emachine with win7 will be running hamachi and minecraft server, connected to the laptop with xp for internet, then i have my main laptop, connected to the same network with hamachi, then all my friends can play together in our own little world.. without all the noise from those 2 computers cause there in the other room.

Hi Digital,

is your D-Link Fast Ethernet adopter detected in windows XP. go to Control Panel open network connections and check whether it is there. if not you need to install the driver.

To install a driver. Right Click My Computer click Manage then click device Manager go to network adopters you should see a yellow exclamation mark on the device right click and say update driver and point to the driver files that you downloaded.

Once the driver is installed restart the computer.. after that go to network connections in control panel double click the adopter that connects to the internet click properties then click sharing and select share my internet connection and select the adopter you want to share it with.

Cheers !!!!

thanks! that worked.. i'm not very used to working with xp and is quite different navigating around than vista or seven.. i usually just remember what to search for and it takes me there... plus windows 7 automatically downloads drivers.. which is VERY nice
