Internet/WIFI disconects 50+ times a day - how to tell what it is?

This is getting beyond frustrating. My internet has been disconnecting 50+ times per day and it's driving me nuts.

I know it's not just my computer as all wifi devices are having issues.

How can I tell what is disconnecting, the router or the cable internet itself?

Calling up tech support for the cable internet is pointless as they never know what they're talking about, tell me that everything looks like it's working fine & they can send a technician out, which they've done before and it does nothing.

Seems like it's hit or miss. I'd blame it on the most recent solar flare but it's been doing this longer than a few days at this point.

:tip: Plug your PC directly to the modem for testing . If you get disconnected then you know what is causing the issues .

All devices have been having issues, wired or wireless, so it's not just the dongle on the PC.

You can also open two command prompts and type in the text below.

Command prompt:1
ping -t 8.8.8.8

Command prompt:2
This one depends on your default gateway/router
If you don't know the address you can use ipconfig to view it

ping -t router address


Then let them run. When you decide its ran long enough hit ctrl+c to stop them. Look at the results and post them here. If you see connection issues with one but not the other you can find the source.

Ok I'm running the 1st command prompt now. How long should I let it run, 10 minutes or 10 hours?

For the second, when I try ti run ipconfig.exe from the start menu it opens & closes quickly & I can't get any info?

You need to run them both from the command line. Just run them till you see disconnects. We and make sure they're both running. So use two command line prompts.

You can ignore the slight differences in the ping command line... just use ipconfig gateway info. Most of the time, that is your router's IP.

As was said, keep these two pings running.
This will let you know where the connection dies:
between computer and router
or
between computer and Google (8.8.8.8)

If your internet dies and you can still ping the router...
...then most likely the router is okay.
If both pings start timing out at the same time...
...then the router might be locking up.
