Is a 5.1 surround sound system a no-go for my rig?

So far as I can tell, my Mini-Tower PC has no 5.1 stereo output:

Is this a deadend or is there some workaround?

The answer is no. That built-in audio from the motherboard doesn't provide 5.1. An add-on PCI-e small form factor card will. Or there are USB solutions out there. SIW2 made mention of what one looks like. It has to be low profile.

BTW- there's no such thing as stereo 5.1.

Stereo is two channels, right and left. 5.1 is 6 channels: front left (1), front right (2), center (3), rear left (4), rear right (5) and the subwoofer (6).

Now-a-days there are side channels for 7.1 or 7.2 I think...two subwoofers. That would be the consumer line of things...

I'm intrigued...what are the "USB solutions" you mentioned? Sounds easier than fooling with a PCI-e card, but the devil is in the details.

The devil is in the details in that USB can be problematic, where's PCI-e not so much. Also, good quality USB sound cards can be mighty pricey and you don't want to go with some off brand either.

Here's something to consider, but due note I don't know how good it is since I don't use something like this. I use mini USB stereo sound cards on a USB powered hub for a project, but that's waaay beyond the scope of this discussion.

If you're really interested I can ask a friend of mine who's a massive audiophile about what USB sound card you should consider. The one linked to above may be on his list of go-tos.

Besides, PCI-e installation is not hard at all. Just insert the PCI-e card in the slot and install the driver.
