Hello,

I have a setup with a special partition with users folders on a hard drive but some sector fail and there is a warning. I tried to clone the hd with a clonage device but it failed maybe because of those bad sectors.
Can I put a new hard drive in place of the old one and create a new profile on this new hard drive from somewhere ? Without reinstalling Windows x64 pro sp1 ?

Best Regards.

Do an image backup of your hard drive onto an external drive with something like Macrium Reflect Free. Remove the bad hard drive, and install a new hard drive. Now restore the image you made from the external drive to the new hard drive.

When you install Macrium, it will give you the option of creating an emergency boot disk (I don't remember what it is called). Be sure to create this disk, and be sure to put the USB drivers on it, so that it will be able to read your external hard drive. After making the image of your hard drive, you will need to boot from the emergency boot disk in order to be able to restore to the new hard drive.

This is the standard way that everyone fixes this issue.

Do an image backup of your hard drive

If I do that the pc will crash/freeze when reading bad sectors like it happened.

Can the image be made from the bad hard drive plugged in my external clonage device ? I mean from a usb device(that read bad hd) to an external usb drive.

There are two types of backups: an image backup and a clone backup. The one you need is an image backup.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "clonage" device. However, you can connect the drive as an external USB drive if you have the proper device for this. (I don't have any experience with that myself, so I can't recommend any particular device.) Or you could install the drive into another computer as the 2nd drive, then do the backup on that computer.

But the easiest way to backup the drive would be to first install Macrium Reflect Free, then create the Macrium Emergency boot disk (with USB drivers included), then boot from the emergency disk. In this way, your drive will no longer be the boot drive, but rather the secondary drive. Hopefully that will make it possible for you to get a backup of the drive. Since it won't be your boot drive, it is not likely that the computer will crash when you are doing the backup.

Bonne courage!

Thank you.

Should I choose Linux, BartPE or WindowsPE to use with win7 NTFS partitions ?

Should I create this rescue cd on pc I want to backup ?

Best regards.

I believe you have Windows 7 now, on the bad disk. Therefore you should get Macrium Reflect Free for Windows, install it on that computer, and then make a Macrium emergency boot disk with the Macrium you just installed on that computer.

You don't need to worry about the partition. Whatever type of partition you currently have on the bad disk will be automatically created on the new disk.

I use Windows PE for my Macrium boot disc. It is a fairly big download so be prepared for that.

You will definitely need to create the rescue boot CD, otherwise you wont be able to install the image you have created.

When you have created the rescue CD, you should test it to make sure that it works before you start to do any major changes. Also go into the BIOS & change the boot order & set the DVD drive as the first boot device.

When you boot from the rescue CD that you have created, it might take a minute or two to actually boot the computer, so don't expect it to boot immediately.
