As you all know when you install a program you mainly get a desktop icon.

Is it possible to stop program installers putting icons on my desktop?

It depends on the software you're installing. Some has the option to toggle on or off the placement of an icon on the desktop while on the menu of installation.

I think so especially on those programmed to be the case. I can't see any trouble with it at all though as you can always delete any icons on your desktop in case one appeared after installation of any programs.

While I can see a program installing an icon on one's desktop being an irritant, it takes all of one second to drag it to the Recycle Bin. What I find really irritating are the program installers that try to sneak a tool bar past you or change your brower's home page, especially when they hide it behind a normal install.
