Parental filters for pornographic content will come as a default setting for all homes in the UK by the end of 2013, says David Cameron's special advisor on preventing the sexualization and commercialization of childhood, Claire Perry MP.

Internet service providers (ISP) will be expected to provide filtering technology to new and existing customers with an emphasis on opting out, rather than opting in.

Access to pornographic images via peer-to-peer networks, sites like reddit and Imgur, and also to pornographic content created by young people themselves is unlikely to be affected by this initiative.
Cool. So they are hampering access to legitimate businness (pr0n is a legitimate businness) while still allowing the major pedo-pornography (and free porn) channels to work?

Congrats to them.

I also like statement like this
the analogy I've used with these companies is, 'you've got yourself into a situation, by default, where you are peddling [pornography] to kids in a way that you never intended.'"
Ooh now let's outlaw cars because they can be used to commit any kind of evil crimes on children.

Hi there
just use OPERA browser -- enable TURBO and it has an inbuilt Icelandic Proxy -- even in UK blocked sites inc Pirate Bay are accessible.

While I don't condone easy access to Pornography -- it's not illegal and IMO PARENTS should be responsible for what their kids get up to not the state.

In any case now the UK seems to be going Bonkers blocking anything in sight -- they are now trying to block Football (Soccer) live streaming sites that operate quite LEGALLY in places like Sweden etc.

The UK will soon have more severe censorship than the PRC - People's Republic of China -- actually even when I was last in Shanghai I really didn't get too much trouble logging on to anything I wanted -- OK I know I was a Westerner and probably different rules apply -- but then the PRC never made the pretence that it was a totally free and democratic country anyway.

(Here's OPERA accessing TPB -- I'm currently using a Virgin Media site in the UK where TPB is Blocked when you use IE -- and all the standard proxies have been blocked too). Ensure the Turbo feature is enabled to access the built in proxy.

However there's NOTHING the UK Courts can do to shut down the Icelandic proxy built into opera.

There also is NOTHING ILLEGAL about using torrents -- it's what you DOWNLOAD determines whether the law is being broken. -- You might just as well charge FORD MOTOR CO for killing people every time there's a fatal traffic accident involving a Ford Car. - the fact that people use torrents for accessing certain material is nothing to do with it -- what ever happened to "Innocent until proved Guilty" -- obviously doesn't work in UK any more.

Cheers
jimbo

I have to go with the last three posts. Porn IS a legitimate business, even if not for everyone. I personally find the more "out there" gun/weapons sites to be "pornographic". Does that mean they will be blocked too? "Pornography", like most everything else, is a matter of taste and opinion. MY tastes and opinions are MINE and I expect nobody else to adhere to them.

Kudos for the reference to Opera browser (which is my browser of choice for years now)

Meh, whenever they pull the "think of the children" card it's when they are doing stuff for other reasons. I assume that once they get the system in place they will start adding more and more sites (they actually care more of) to the blacklists.

While we are talking of weapons... admittedly none seems to care about the abundance of info about DIY your own explosives and incendiaries. I guess blowing up and burning down stuff and people is better than seeing a bunch of naked females/males.
Make love not war!

Exactly! Its the old "camels nose under the tent flap" scam, pretty soon EVERYTHING will be either white-listed or black-listed and guess who will decide which category sites will belong in? Sure won't be "us". And I would much rather look at a well rounded bottom than a well rounded weapons magazine anyday!

*Sigh* Sexualization of children. If they were truly concerned then it would be a multi-faceted approach covering ALL forms of media. Don't see that happening.

The sad thing is, the rationale they are using for this is the April Jones murders, stating that they found child pron on his computer. Fine, except that this is not going to do a jot to stop that. It's not like you can just go to Google and search for it.

We have had default content filtering here in the UK on mobile phones for many years. It's a PITA. Firstly, they block a ton of stuff that doesn't need to be blocked, such as MSN messenger, information about breast cancer, etc. It actually makes the internet on my phone basically unusable except when I'm on Wifi (which is not restricted as it's provided by my ISP). Secondly you can't actually remove it without a credit card (saying they need that to verify your age.) I would not be at all surprised if this ISP thing went the same way.

Don't get me wrong, I'm about to become a parent myself, and I appreciate that children need to be protected against these things, but surely it's my responsibility as a parent to decide what I do and don't want my children to see, not the states?.

This is just the whole Digital Britain content filtering thing all over again, except this time they are stating that it's to protect children to try and get less people to fight against it. How much do you want to bet that once it's in, other websites will be quietly added to the list? It's not like it will have to go back to Parliament to get it added, as the nature of these sites is that the ISPs will need to have the power to add new sites themselves on a daily basis.

for the phone you could try Opera browser with its turbo boost feature as jimbo said in the third post.

Or the Orbot app, that routes your traffic though Tor anonimity network.
