I've been trying to build a custom PC for a while now, any help?

It's hard to take one of these threads seriously if the ''builder'' is having a hard time understanding the importance of a PSU.

I had to go ahead and spent around 120 for my silent pro 850w. Better safe than sorry.

I take them seriously since the OP did come and ask for help and to be enlightened.

I understand that. But whenever a user preffer to go cheap on a PSU because price is a limitation.. they need some education on that. If they still prefer to get a cheap PSU because they can save money well...

I wouldn't like their 2000 dollar system go bzzz bzzzz for using a Pixxo PSU.

When i first started with computers years ago i never really paid much attention to the PSU. through research i learned more about them and the problems that can arise from an insufficient power supply, but it took building my own to really respect the PSU. to me it is the life-blood of the computer. it must be 80+, at least 10-15% more capacity than you need at full load, and from a reputable company. and preferably modular.

From owning OEM computers, and working on OEM computers, I saw that the PSU was usually just a cheap part. When you go to a store and the salesperson is talking about all of the spec's for differnt desktops, the PSU manufacturer is never mentioned. When someone is bragging about how top notch their PC is, they mention the CPU, RAM, SSD's and GFX card, but rarely the PSU. So, it is understandable that the majority of computer users don't place as much importance on the PSU nor understand how to rate and compare them and pick the best one for their system.

I only hope that through this site, when people come on here, they will see the importance of a good PSU as a good deal of the members on here are savvy computer builders and actually talk about the PSU in detail...

Hi there
You might find the PSU's available in Mexico still have most of the Power connectors the 4 Pin IDE type.
A modern Mobo will have most if not all the connectors as SATA type. I'm sure you will be using SATA / eSATA / SSD drives and not IDE any more.

No problem though - just get cheap IDE==>SATA adapters -- pic enclosed.

It's a couple of years since I was in Mexico -- worked for a while at PE MEX. You could get decent components quite cheaply but they weren't always the latest available.

Remember also if you get a higher power PSU - heat becomes an issue -- in Mexico that's going to be a problem anyway -- also if you have the machine on most of the time power costs might be an issue too.

Hell, I live in Nuevo Leon and it gets substiancially hotter, but we do have A/C's... you know?

wasn't implying anything Anti-Mexico -- I was just saying what I found a few years ago in Monterey while working with PEMEX.
I remember going to a Soccer match and was the only "White looking" guy around -- a couple of local supporters were saying -- El Gringo --what does he know about Football -- he's from "El Norte". Anyway I managed to explain to them I was much further North than their "El Norte" and understood and liked Football. We then got into discussions in "Spanglish" !! about Manchester Utd, Bayern Munchen etc. Had a great afternoon - and these guys who probably between them in 3 months earned less than I was in ONE DAY would not let me buy a single drink / food etc. Monterey won the game as well - but a great time and love the food. !!

You shouldn't buy an underpowered battery for your vehicle because every one has a number of things it has to have power for. It comes from the factory with a standard size that it calls for. That standard size battery is actually more than is needed because it has to have the power to run all of the components when it is freezing cold, and boiling hot.

A power supply for a computer has to have enough CLEAN power for the best and worst case scenarios. They have to perform in clean, cool cases just as they do in dusty, dirty, hot cases. They have to regulate the power coming in from the wall in countries all over the world........not just the countries with the best power grid. Power is dirty, inconsistent, and unreliable at times and a GOOD power supply will make sure your components have enough clean power to function correctly. It is NOT the part to cut corners on.

I know, I know. I was just messing with you. I've come to get used to the weather. It's still terrible, and people still call me ''Guero'' all the time, but hey. It's a nice place. It can get really hot, but so does Texas.

Never underestimate the importance of the power supply, use a good brand and buy a powerful one. It will save you money in lower running costs and reliability. I use http://www.enermaxusa.com/ but others recommend Corsair, Silverstone.
Stability starts with a good power supply. Trust me I spend half my life repairing them and have seen the same mistakes over and over again.
