Java and Firefox on 7 64bit

xmun

New member
I am running Firefox 3.0.5 on Windows 7 x64.

I installed JRE 6u12 32bit and 64bit but java applets don't seem to want to run. I visited the java test page - the test applet does not run.

Firefox lists Java in the addons - plugins list but it simply doesn't call java.

Has anyone managed to work around this?

Thanks

Is it Fx 32 bit or 64bit?

Seeing as you have JAVA 1.6U12 installed *both* have the required plugin for browsers - but, if your browser is 32bit, and you installed the 64bit after the 32bit JDK, you hosed yourself....

I am using 32bit Firefox,
I first installed 32bit Java and after I had no luck I install 64bit Java,
I also tried reinstalling 32bit afterwards.

Using both IE32 and IE64 java works fine. I'm not sure what's wrong. I'd like to know if anyone is encountering the same issue.

I tried both x32's...3.05 and now with 3.1b2.

I also did a quick one with Minefield but flash isn't compatible so I dumped that one.

you mean 64bit right

I tried both x32's...3.05 and now with 3.1b2.

lol java does not work in 32 bit...(even after the reinstall of both)
the funny thing is that minefield x64 does work with java x64 (with java x64 installed of course)

I can't get it to work either. It downloads the files, does the extraction (or whatever) thing, then Windows Installer crashes. Both Firefox and IE.

here
the temporary solution is to delete the machinetranslate in here... (using regedit)

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions

Many users have started experiencing random crashing of explorer and msiexec.exe when trying to start Windows Update or install anything that uses an MSI based installer. This issue is bad enough that some people have even formatted because of it, only to have it come back again.
Rafael has discovered that the fault lies with the SQM Client which is part of the Customer Experience Improvement Program. It seems that ANY process that calls WinSqmStartSession in ntdll.dll will start crashing when MachineThrottling is enabled in the registry, which seems to happen as a result of CEIP running.
There are two workarounds for this issue. One may only be temporary, while the other should be permanent. I will list the permanent method here so everyone can cure the issue once and for all.

1. Delete the string values (Except for (Default)) in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
2. Start gpedit.msc
3. Expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand System, expand Internet Communication Management, and then click Internet Communication settings.
4. In the details pane, double-click Turn off Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program, and then click Enabled.

Yes, doing the above WILL disable the anonymous usage data (CEIP), but until Microsoft fixes the issue and issues a hotfix or a new build I don’t see any other options to ensure the issue does not occur again.

Java isn't working in FF for me either. OS is Windows 7 x64 beta. Tried FF 3.1b2 in combination with the 32-bit version of the latest Java, and as the poster above described, nothing happens when I try any page containing a Java applet. Java appears in my list of FF plugins. Tried this with a clean profile to ensure that no addons (noscript, adblock plus, etc) are interfering. Tried installing the 64-bit version of Java. Also as described above, Java is working fine in IE 8.

I'm really surprised that I haven't seen anything other than this single message thread and one bug report on Bugzilla with no votes and no replies (aside from mine) as I'm thinking this is probably going to be a problem for everyone who is running FF in Windows 7. Even today, a Google search just isn't making it seem as if anyone other than a few of us have noticed a problem.

Fix? Worked for me

I believe I have the fix as I was also having problems.

1. Install Java from their download page.
2. After install reboot (not sure if it's necessary but I did anyway)
3. Go to Control Panel (expanded view) and you'll see a Java (32bit) icon.
4. Click on Icon and Java Control Panel will open.
5. Click Advanced Tab
6. Click + sign For Java Plug-in
7. Uncheck Box that says Enable Next Generation plug in.
8. Close your browser (if it was open). I think I rebooted here, too..probably not necessary.
9. Go to the Java Test Page and click the version link at top of page.
10. You should see a pink box (I did) with version you have installed.

I also found this blog that shows why Java might not be working on x64 Vista and how to fix it....I am certain it applies for x64 Windows 7 as well.
