Is there any way to find out how old your compiuter is? I have a laptop. I need a new screen and keyboard. I won't change from Windows 7 . Do not want to buy new one. Computer guy asked how old it is....I don't remember. How long has windows 7 been out? Is there anyplace on the puter that says when it was built? Reason I am asking is that the tech says he will repair my computer but depending on how old it is the harddrive may go and I would need a whole new puter then.

I can tell you I have rubbed off the letters on 13 keys and made my own replacements, and I have 5 keys that will not work unless I hit them very hard. But it has everything I want and is a great puter. What do you think?????

HP is still offering Windows 7 on laptops - check out their store online or Amazon for a Lenovo. The machine you currently are using will cost a lot lto repair versus a new one with better spec's overall.
Just my opinion

Well.....wish I knew this a week ago. When I could not get on the forum . The new ones we looked at were from $400 for a Intel I3 to $800 Intel I5. I would have to buy Word again ( another $99) Office ($???) Reload everything. The guy is charging me $99 for a 17" screen, $59 for the keyboard, $69 for labor, plus tax. Today i asked him about the age of the laptop. He said Windows 7 came out 4 or 5 years years ago so it is not that old. BUT if the hard drive goes I am toasted.

I have Intel I5, 490GB left of my hard drive , 6GB ram 5.8 usable , it runs good, I use it every day...

MILES AHEAD

"The day you initialized it should be the day your user account was created." Can you tell me how to find that date????

Did I get overcharged???
Thanks, Eileen

Open Explorer to C:\Users

right click on the folder for your account. Creation date should be it.

btw you can get a usable Toshiba Laptop cheap(under $300 I think.). But they weigh a ton. OK if you mainly use it as a semi-desktop. But it does come with W8.

this is what I am going to do with the laptop.

Well, I am into this for now. Will have to see how it works out. Have already paid him half. The computers that have been suggested are priced right but don't have near what I have on mine. Don't want to go backwords...

Thanks everyone for your input. I really appreciate it...... Wish me luck....

Eileen

I keep mine running 7-10 years.

A lot has to do with how rough you treat it. If you treat it like a baby it will last longer. If you treat it like a book it may not.

You had a perfect install so as far as the software goes if you stick with the tools and methods in reinstall tutorial to maintain it then that should last years longer.

Reason I am asking is that the tech says he will repair my computer but depending on how old it is the harddrive may go and I would need a whole new puter then.

As long as you have your all your data and the OS backed up to external media you can always recover if the hard drive ever fails.
You can probably pick up a HD for apx. $50 if you ever need to, and those are user serviceable, so they are easy to replace.

Greg, you did a SUPER job helping me with the install this spring. I sit with the laptop in my lazy boy. I set it down when I get up. I was 2" too close to the laptop when the corner of the chair came down on it. As for the keyboard I use it every night.... This is the first one that I have rubbed the letters off the keys....

Will let you know how I do when I get the keyboard and screen installed.....
Thanks, Eileen
