Solved just today I installed MS Office 2013 Home and Student...

... I dont seem to be able to create an icon in Desktop
It is listed under programs and features in the Control Panel but all i can do from there is to uninstall.. not to create icon in desktop. Typing the name of the program under Start and then enter takes me anywhere.
Could somebody tell me in 123 steps how to get an icon in the desktop from where to start Word...Excel Power Point or OneNote?

Let me know if this works for you:
...open Windows (file) Explorer
...navigate to the file named EXCEL.EXE
...right click on that file
...select Send to from the context menu
...select Desktop (create shortcut) from the sub-menu

Repeat for each program of interest.

Actually the most productive (I've found) place is to pin the program to your Taskbar,
That way you can use the Jump lists to pin commonly used and accessed doc files..
But If it's listed on the All programs list/ Start/ All Programs,
Right click which ever office program you want and click on Send To, Desktop Create shortcut.

Those shortcuts are "special" as they lack a normal target line. They tend to go away from the desktop when the "System Maintenance Troubleshooter" runs (but only for some people???). See this post & its videos. I've had better luck with "real" old fashion shortcuts.

mswhip, I just select the Microsoft office folder in the list of programs. select word and then right click to
copy the shortcut to the desktop. works for me every time.

Either that or right click word and then drag it to the desktop and paste a copy.

I don't want to hijack this thread with the issue of desktop icons disappearing. I mention the link that you posted in this post/thread. For whatever reason, the fixit does not solve the problem (nor does manually doing the steps mentioned in that link). I cannot tell you how many hours I have wasted recreating desktop shortcuts on more than a dozen computers at work - and hours wasted chasing down solutions/workarounds.

There is another KB article that takes a different approach to "fixing" the problem of desktop shortcuts being deleted - it mentions turning off the System Maintenance Troubleshooter. I find that insane. That troubleshooter checks on too many things that are good/needed (in my opinion). Like hard drive health.

I was finally able to find the folder, after that placing a copy in desktop was easy as usual.
