Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) 5.80 helps remove malicious software from computers running Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft generally releases MSRT monthly as part of Windows Update or as the standalone tool. Use this tool to find and remove specific prevalent threats and reverse the changes they have made (see covered threats). For comprehensive malware detection and removal, consider using Microsoft Safety Scanner.

This article contains information about how the tool differs from an antivirus or antimalware product, how you can download and run the tool, what happens when the tool finds malware, and tool release information. It also includes information for the administrators and advanced users, including information about supported command-line switches.

Note In compliance with the Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy, MSRT is no longer supported on Windows Vista and older platforms. For more information, go to Microsoft Support Lifecycle.

I'm puzzled, I thought there were no more updates, is the MSWT an exception, a last farewell from MS, or for those who've paid to continue to receive updates?

Same applies to KB4539601?

MS have stated for months no more updates after 14 January. I'm reluctant to install these to be honest.

Kb4539601 is a hotfix somehow for the wallpaper on certain machine set to strech. I think it is ok to install it safely

Or try the stand-alone package: KB4539602 Stretched wallpaper displayed as black fix Windows 7 Feb. 7 if you want it safer.

That was strange because MSRT showed up in WU but didn't install. After me rebooting trying to install Kb4537820, the MSRT kb890830 wasn't anymore proposal in WU, but this last one is no harm for your PC

Yesterday, I manually activated check for updates thru WU. It returned MSRT KB890830, I installed it with no problems then or afterwards. I’m not evolved with the paid extended updates.

Didn’t receive KB4539601, maybe because I don’t have personalized or stretched wallpaper.

Just noticed this below link. So maybe it’s best if you don’t install KB4539601 if you don’t have black screen on desktop. As it is also included in this link.

Win 7/Server 2008 R2: Boot issues with Update KB4539602 | Born's Tech and Windows World

Agreed, I wasn't going to install this one as I don't have the stretched wallpaper issue.

I'll wait for a while to see if there are any problems with the removal tool. Just seems strange to me that it should arrive after we were told 'no more updates'. At the moment, my laptop has not fallen foul of the stretched wallpaper issue or the problems caused by Bitdefender or Adobe, so I'm don't feel inclined to tempt fate by installing any further updates.
