Got home today to find that IE would not open at all or very slowly, and my discovered errors in the system log regarding a failed paging operation on the hard drive. This is generally an indication that the hard drive is failing, so I began preparations for the funeral. Looking through the logs, I noticed that my computer had awoken itself at 3 AM and that's when the errors started. More investigation showed that it was Windows Update that woke the computer and KB980182 had been installed. Rolling back KB980182 resolved my problem, but not after I'd wasted a couple of hours troubleshooting.
