Hi all.I have an internet speed of 10Mbs on LAN.I average about 2-5Kbs.Sometimes more.I have seen it as high as 180.I know that there are restrictions on this network,but i think that i should be getting faster downloads than my current speed(0-3Kb).Can i stabalize this or is there nothing i can do?Please help.I am so frustrated i could strangle somebody.

I think that some one on this public network is manipulating bandwidth.Can I lock in a speed manually when I get a decent speed?

Go to Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test, click the Begin test button and post results here (donload, upload, Ping).

If the connection isn't yours, then there's not a lot you can do about "controlling" speed. If the owner has decided to throttle client's bandwidth, then you'd have to talk to the owner. How many other people have access to this connection and what type of connection is it, and, more importantly, how much bandwidth does the connection have?

Do you get better speeds on other public networks? That you've seen up to 180 KB/s suggest you're able to get better speed, but that's still relatively slow.

Click Start and in the search box type, msconfig and press Enter.
Now click the Startup tab, click Disable All, Apply and OK> Restart.



Then run speedtest to check for any improvements.

I'm at a hotel.CAT-5 Ethernet.Supposed to be 10Mbs.I just started with computers so I don't a lot about connections.First one I've ever been connected to. 20-30 connections is a wild guess.Netork discovery is turned off. I'll turn off startup and get back to you.:huh:

Thats what i thought... I suspect your problems are down to something called contention, basically you are fighting everyone in the hotel for that 10Mbps connection, depending how many people there are in the hotel then these speeds can get very low, (as you have seen) the fact that your speed varies (as you said you can get 180Kbps at times) would seem to confirm this. If this is the case, im sorry to tell you there really isnt alot you can do except try and get on when its quiet

Scanned the article.Informative.I know it sure seems like a fight.I get so aggravated sometimes.I cant even watch online reruns.Forget about gaming.I know this system is capable at average at least.Oh well.The wife can play Pogo.She's happy.Guess thats all that matters. Still...I want to experience the world of technology unfettered.I'm new at this and I feel I'm being juked.NOT GIVING UP.Thanks for all the confirmation.You guys are great.An invaluable resource.

Just one point to add here ...

There are two speeds which are involved in connecting to the internet over a LAN (Ethernet or wired), these are .....

The LAN Speed, which is the connection to the hotel system and their router.

This LAN speed is displayed in the network properties of windows (as your screenshot shows) Common Speeds here are 10 or 100Mbit/s - you appear to be connected here at 10 Mb/s.


There is also the WAN speed, which is the connection from the Hotel to the Internet itself - this may be advertised by the hotel as a rate but this due to many factors will be less than advertised in actual use. This is due to losses in lines, and contention, this speed is shown by the online test that you presented in I think your second post.

For example at the moment I have a LAN speed of 100 Mb/s but a WAN speed of only 6 Mb/s

Yes,It all helps.I still can't accept that NOTHING can be done.Even being a newbie,I recognize potential.Now that I've finally started on this path of logic-based machines,I will explore it with great zest.And knowing that there are those out there that can share their knowledge/experience makes me feel more comfortable doing so.Hope 2012 doesn't stop me short!HA

This is a laptop right? Maybe go to a Starbucks and get online there. Or look for local free wifi spots. places like McAlisters have free wifi (obviously you have to eat [nothing is free{sorry}]) you can at least test out the system to see its full potential.

also for places with shared networks, a lot of the time, they set a number of users, then break up the bandwidth to that number. this is good and bad. Good: You are gaurenteed access even if your neighbor is trying to download GB's of data. Bad: and yet, if no one else is on, you are still capped at that speed.

for example: so for 100 rooms, the bandwidth is divided into 100 chunks. you get one chunk and that is your chunk. You will have that speed no matter who else is on.

I just thought I'd add to this thread with some insider information.

Having been a network administrator that has worked very closely with a large number of chain hotels, I can tell you that you will rarely get the advertised speed. This is most likely illegal (in some countries) and unfortunate, technology has grown so fast that most governments don't have procedures and systems in place to monitor these advertising breaches. It would be expensive for them to measure with little reward.

I’m definitely aware of bandwidth throttling from a large number of hotels as unwritten policy. The most commonly throttled (or blocked) applications are torrent apps, download sites, some online games and video streaming sites, especially adult orientated sites.


There are various ways to circumnavigate throttling and blocking. Success depends on the lengths that the hotel team has gone to restrict your access (which is usually fairly basic). There are also simple ways to get around the double charge if you add more than one device to your hotel room. Most workarounds are well known although not often applied; however, they may also be applied in the workplace and I’m a little reluctant to post due to legality and ethical considerations. Although I’m happy to write a whistle blower and workaround article for admin review.

Lastly, I just want to add that not all hotels block or throttle traffic and the problem may be due to the hotel’s ISP or any of the other great suggestions (such as bandwidth sharing, or hardware limitations/connectivity) mentioned earlier in this thread.

Thanks TimStitt.The manager here confirmed the restriction of LAC.I never use torrent due to seeing my friends scream about computer crashes.I am mainly concerned because I like to watch MI5,24,and other reruns.It's a little difficult to do so at 3kbs.I would like to try online gaming as well......FORGET ABOUT IT.I'm sure that the system is very basic.I'm just not that computer savvy,yet.THE GAME IS AFOOT!
