Laptop behaving very strange

Since this morning, one of my laptops is behaving very strange.

Symptoms:

• Noticeable keyboard delay i.e. what's typed appears on screen with a delay. When typing, not all characters typed are shown. Example: last sentence (underlined) was before editing noll haracters typed ahown. It's not my bad typing, I know I typed every letter and space
• Opened menus stay open only a few seconds, disappearing then
• Focus changes constantly between active window and taskbar
• Back and forward using thumb buttons in mouse work with 3 to 5 second delay

That seems not so much but please believe me it makes this laptop very unpleasant to use at the moment.

EDIT: I suspected a keylogger but Anti-MalwareBytes found nothing.

Not very helpful, I know, but have you tried a system restore (my favorite generic tip)?

Kari, are you using a wireless keyboard? I find that there are times when I experience the same thing and need to resync the wireless connection. I've also seen where it was necessary to change the USB port where the receiver is connected to the laptop.

@Jonathan, no I have not. Ran a full scan with MSE and Anti-MalwareBytes, found nothing, decided to give SuperAntispyware a change.

@Corrine, yes. It's a Bluetooth set. I disconnected and paired it again.

If I'm not going to find anything, I'm going to restore an image from last week. Thanks geeks for your tips.

Hi Kari,

Is it the same scenario when you boot in safe mode or as another user?

If you can open Task manager, have a look at the processes running, maybe you can fidn a suspect process and kill it.

Some other thoughts:

- Is sticky keys enabled?
- I wonder if the shortcut to change languages or keyboards has been tampered with. I think by default it's something like RIGHT ALT + P?
- Have you done the big keyboard sweep on each key to ensure that nothing is stuck down?
- Does the keyboard work in BIOS?
- Have you tried to Re-install the drivers?

I've seen a case where a bad battery was causing this issue. Try taking out your battery, then run on AC power alone.

Why I am suspecting a keylogger or other malware is that keyboard works flawless both in BIOS and safe mode. Checked the video and post about Logitech Illuminated keyboard probs, nothing to do with my kb.

I think I need to restore an earlier image.

I'd restore too, it'll solve everything and will probably take less time than troubleshooting.

If you want one last go at it try this UnHackMe - First BootWatch AntiRootkit from Greatis Software. The trial will should get rid of any malware of keyloggers if you have them and you can uninstall it afterwards (or re-image).

Time to restore the image. This is very annoying. Tried everything I could think off, for instance turning WiFi off from router to see if the WiFi signal was causing some malfunction in Bluetooth.

Not solved but case closed, I'm restoring.

Captain, tried that too. Changed the batteries, un-paired and re-paired, everything.

Sorry, I completely forgot to mention this earlier:

When fellow geeks here earlier asked if this happens also when in BIOS or in Safe Mode, I noticed that the issue was not only my Bluetooth keyboard but the laptop keyboard was also acting weird. My Bluetooth kb does not work at all when in BIOS, so when there I used the laptops kb and afterwards when booting to Windows continued to use it, noticing it was acting similarly weird.

All is well now, an image from early last week restored. Everything works.
