I've restarted it multiple times. I have an HP Windows & Home Premium. I've also done a system restore. About 20 mins after turning it on, some the programs I'm running will either slow way down, close, or freeze. When I check for problems I get this:

Windows
Problem: Shut down unexpectedly
Files that help describe the problem:
101111-26832-01.dmp
sysdata.xml
WERInternalMetadata.xml

Could it be a virus or something? Please help. :(

Hello amil, and welcome to Sevenforums.

Run an sfc scan: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139810-sfc-scannow-run-command-prompt-boot.html - created by Bare Foot Kid

You said some programs will slow down. Assuming it is only certain programs, uninstall as many of those programs as you can (if you don't lose anything), and then reinstall them. That way you can fix any corruption in a specific program.

What antivirus program are you running? Update it and run a full scan with it.

Type "event viewer" into the start menu search bar, click it, expand "custom views", and click "administrative events". Look for any errors pertaining to the problem, copy all the information it lists and post it here.

Thanks for the reply! I will run the scan ASAP.

I have McAfee and I've already done a full scan and everything came back just fine.

When I run the event viewer this is what I get:

Event ID 500

"The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario : Video memory resources are over-utilized and there is thrashing happening as a result. Reducing number of running programs and open windows may help resolve this condition."

Event ID 500

"The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario : The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded."

Amil,

You just might be in luck. McAfee, or "MucAfee", as one of our more renouned members put it, is a resource hog and hard on Windows 7. It is a poor quality antivirus, and no one had to pay me to say that. If you decide to remove it, use this tool (as most antiviruses leave files behind unless you use an uninstaller tool): |MG| McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 5.0.285.0 Download. You will need to download and run it. It lists at least 3 download locations, choose any one.

If you would like another, more slimmed down antivirus program, you might be interested in Microsoft's Security Essentials. If not, there is a whole thread on many different antiviruses, and you might take an interest in the discussions: http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/72070-whats-best-anti-virus.html

Aside from that, here is a tutorial on how to speed up and refine windows without having to download anything: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11728-optimize-windows-7-a.html - tutorial created by Brink
